Sinkane is the project of the Sudanese-born musician Ahmed Gallab. Gallab cut his own teeth as a youngster in the punk DIY landscape of middle America, and then found himself touring far and wide as a member of Yeasayer, Caribou, Eleanor Friedberger, Born Ruffians, and Of Montreal. He has emerged from it all as Sinkane, a project that identifies a renaissance within the space and spirit of the outposts of contemporary music. With an aesthetic range seamlessly shifting from soul to rock, and from jazz to pop, Sinkane’s vibe is timeless and the sound is now.

Young Dreams

After uploading three tracks on their Facebook page November 2010 Young Dreams quickly received an overwhelming response from both national and international music press and blogs. This included attention from The Guardian, XL Recording, Rough Trade, Nylon Magazine, The fader and national music radio shows.  Two 7” was release on Tellé  Records spring 2011. They also got to play key festivals like the Hove festival, By:Larm and Camden Crawl. The Bergen based Norwegian collective now just has to wait for the rest of the world to catch up. Fusing Tropicália, psychedelic rock, classical, symphonic arrangements and traditional pop recalling the classic sounds of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, Young Dreams both adheres to and upends the conventional definitions of pop music, creating a sound that’s at once refreshingly familiar and daringly unique.

Animal Collective will be the kneejerk comparison – though Young Dreams has only heard a few of the band’s songs – but the band’s influences go deeper than those of their Brooklyn peers. “I’m a big fan of the harmonies and arrangements of the romantic period of classical music,” says Tellez. “I love composers like Edvard Grieg and Stravinsky. But I’m also heavily inspired by people like [lounge music pioneer] Martin Denny and [Argentine composer] Waldo de los Rios.”

Young Dreams exist in their own world; one influenced by the past but always looking forward. A sovereign nation of 12 like-minded souls, restless, eager and always dreaming.

Recently Young Dreams signed with Modular Recording. Debut album is expected to be released early fall 2012.
