DAVE I.D’s debut album entitled ‘‘Response’’, appropriately enough, is mind-bendingly inventive, brilliantly off-kilter and constantly surprising. On ‘HIS’ ethereal vocals echo over funereal synths. It’s darkly evocative, like a forgotten gem by ’80s industrial heroes Chris & Cosey. Elsewhere the clanging beats, noirish chords and pugnacious melodies of ‘When Everything Is In Its Place’ recall harder edged industrial influences such as Einstürzende Neubauten.

After the acclaimed ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ album in 2007 and success of the accompanying tour, the band took a three year sabbatical to catch up on some of the other important things in life. Now they’re back for a short, sharp run of dates this summer, with a set drawn from their four albums over the past decade.

Formed during 1998 in the British seaside town of Brighton, Electrelane soon found they could make fantastic music without the aid of vocals and the massively ambitious debut Rock It To The Moon (2001) stands as a testament to that even now. Its majestic follow up ‘The Power Out’ (2004) managed to be more concise without losing their sense of adventure but it was with ‘Axes’ (2005) that the quartet’s experimentalism reached a natural and organic peak. Borne of improvisations, almost entirely instrumental and recorded all in one go, ‘Axes’ marked the end of Electrelane Mk 1 in an intricate body of music that most bands couldn’t emulate if they had detailed diagrams.

Whereas both the previous two albums were committed to tape at Steve Albini’s renowned Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, the quartet decided to try something different by recording at The Key Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan this time out. From the first euphoric cymbal crashes in ‘The Greater Times’, there seems to be a new kind of light shining on Electrelane which remains strong throughout the album. Whether it’s because of the dainty guitar notes of ‘To The East’, the ebb-and-flow piano of ‘Saturday’ or the charmingly simplistic Ukulele strums on ‘Cut And Run’, there’s no doubt that this is an album inspired by warm emotions. Susman’s surprisingly honest and touchingly tender lyrics also attest to that time and time again but the willingness to push the envelope hasn’t left the band either. At times, ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ touches on the heaviest material they’ve written. For example, the furious, metallic riffing that Clarke slashes out of her guitar during ‘Between The Wolf And The Dog’ are unexpectedly violent but undeniably exciting whilst Gaze pounds the drums with a new found viciousness during ‘Five’ which frequently boils over with rhythmic intensity. But even these moments are executed with a playful heart rather than a perturbed one.

OK, so it might not be ‘pop’ music in the traditional, see-you-on-the-cover-of-Smash-Hits kinda way but this is how Susman, Clarke, Murray and Gaze envision it and as we all know, seeing/hearing the world through someone else eyes/ears is often the best way to broaden the mind. In that respect as well as many others, ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ is an album of enticingly irregular brilliance.

AMANDA BLACK + WIN WIN + BOYS NOIZE
The Nest
Wednesday 13 July 2011
Cancelled

£8.50 ADVANCE

BOYS NOIZE have unfortunately had to cancel their DJ set at tonight’s show due to illness.

Naeem Juwan aka SPANK ROCK comes from the wall-sweating, pipe-bursting, hip-grinding basements of the Baltimore Bass movement. After spending some time at Drexel University in Philly he linked up with the Diplo-powered Hollertronix crew and began crafting the type of live performances that have become underground legend.

Diplo introduced him to the cutting edge UK-based label Ninja Tune and in 2006 he released the seminal electro/rap/booty album YoYoYoYoYo with production partner Alex “XXXChange” Epton. The duo crafted a groundbreaking debut album that many credit as ground zero of the electro/rap movement. Along with Ronnie Darko, Chris Devlin and the sassy trash-talking MC Amanda Blank, the Spank Rock crew quickly set the blogs afire and become known for putting on some of the raunchiest, booty-shaking live shows in the world.

Spank Rock has toured with everyone from Beck to Bjork to the Beastie Boys, has made records with Kylie Minogue, Mos Def and Santigold, and remains one of the most enigmatic and electrifying performers in music today. Spank Rock’s sophomore album, Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar, will be released in 2011 and has a renowned team of producers handpicked by Spank to up the ante from his critically acclaimed debut.

Tonight, Spank Rock performs with performance artist / singer AMANDA BLANK.

‘Up Up Up’ is to be the debut release from the Deep South’s ebullient purveyors of melody, rhythm and anomalous harmonies, Givers. ‘Up Up Up’, which comes from Givers debut album In Light, will be released on July 18th on Glassnote (Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Kele, Two Door Cinema Club, The Temper Trap) in the US and Island Records in the UK. Receiving its world premiere on Radio 1 as Zane Lowe’s Next Hype track, ‘Up Up Up’ is an irresistible calling card, bristling with ideas. Further support for ‘Up Up Up’ comes from Radio 2, 6 Music and XFM.

Based in Lafayette, Louisiana, the quintet was formed by Taylor Guarisco (singer & guitarist) and Tiffany Lamson (singer, ukulele & percussionist), who met at the University of New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina hit, it forced the two back to their home of Lafayette where they met Kirby Campbell (drums, programming & vocals), Nick Stevens (keyboards & flute) and Josh LeBlanc (bass guitar) and began to form the basis for Givers

Givers have spent the last few months wowing audiences across America with their kinetic live show; “we really do play every show like it’s one of our last ones,” says Guarisco. After sold-out tours with Dirty Projectors, appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Givers will be hitting the UK for their first shows in early July ahead of a UK Tour & Field Day festival appearance in August.

“I don’t think it’s possible for me to write in a major key,” says Katie Stelmanis, co-founder and lead singer of Toronto trio AUSTRA. “I don’t know why. It doesn’t seem to factor in my brain”.

On ‘Feel It Break’, Austra’s new album, out May 16th, Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf have crafted a dark, danceable masterpiece suitable for both ritual incantations and clubs; an album hearkening back to the sleazier side of New Wave but still deeply rooted in Stelmanis’s classical and operatic upbringing.

Stelmanis’s innate do-it-yourself ethos hasn’t changed, yet with the addition of former Galaxy member Postepski (Princess Century, Trust) on drums and programming and former Spiral Beach bassist Wolf, the singer has created her best work to date. Written primarily by Stelmanis – “Most of the songs are finished in my bedroom,” says the songwriter – and mixed by Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Prodigy, UNKLE), the album rests nicely with your Kate Bush, Bat For Lashes and The Knife albums, but also conjures up the seedier sides of early 1980s British New Wave (think the dirty alleys and after-hours clubs dreamed up by Japan and Soft Cell.) On their first single “Beat and The Pulse,” Austra have created the warmest cold track of the year, a pulsating, synth-driven attack laced by Stelmanis’s gorgeous, towering vocal

MEMORY TAPES return to play XOYO this summer.

“Putting the disco back into disconnection”  (ho ho ho)

Player Piano, the excellent second album from Memory Tapes is released this summer on Something In Construction Records in Europe and Carpark in the US.  It was, like its predecessor, recorded at Dayve Hawke’s home studio in rural New Jersey, where he juggles looking after his young daughter and being a musician.

Seek Magic was released properly in March 2010 and has since sold over 30,000 copies worldwide.  It received almost exclusively excellent reviews.  Memory Tapes debuted his live show in January 2010 in Manchester, England and has since criss-crossed North America and played shows all across Europe and as far away as Australia.  His remixes of the likes of Crystal Castles, Gucci Mane and Britney Spears have had consistent acclaim.

The template / motif for Player Piano was “keyboard-based psychedelic girl group songs, a sort of Motown suicide note” and so it is.  Largely eschewing modern dance beats this time, there are still the spaces of modern R’n’B, along with 60s pop, 50s doo wop, krautrock, Eastern pop and nods to Aphex Twin.

Again he has chosen not to use sequencing software and has played each instrument in the studio himself.  Some of the elements are played deliberately off-key or out of synch to give the slightly warped yet warm feel that works so beautifully against the topline melodic aspects.

While Seek Magic was quite an electronic sounding record with lots of dance music tropes, Player Piano is all about the melody.

Simply put, there are lots of catchy tunes here, singalong choruses throughout the album and songs that feel very immediate and accessible, despite consistently dark lyrics that describe a disconnected mindset and a profound sense of isolation.

There is a painterly aspect to the composition that gives the album a bright, clear arc that describes a deceptively simple picture, taken as a whole, despite the fact there are hugely contrasting tunes within.  And then again, within each song there are very playful twists and turns, wrong-headed arrangements and some very unusual instrumentation, from 70s Hammond organs to XXXXXXXXXXXXX and YYYYYYY.

Dayve is already working on Memory Tapes’ third album, which is going to be a “space rock, kind of Sabbath” guitar based set.

An earlier version of Today Is Our Life from Player Piano was released earlier this year on Something In Construction’s Love SIC Disco compilation and still yields over 800,000 hits on Google.  There seems to be a natural word-of-mouth spread of Memory Tapes’ music and anticipation for this record is considerable.

Dayve Hawk will be debuting the new album live this summer and the band will be expanded from the previous duo of him and drummer Matt Maraldo.  In addition to the new material the band will be playing more poppy arrangements of old favourites like Bicycle, Green Knight and Graphics from Seek Magic.

24 year old Manchester beatsmith STAR SLINGER has shot to worldwide recognition in a startlingly short amount of time. He has already been named by the Guardian as “best new act of the year by miles”, with his recent track Mornin’ one of the most popular songs across music blogs the world over. He counts the likes of Diplo, Jamie XX, Donald Glover and Benji B amongst the fans of his melodic, chopped up beats, with pitched up soul vocals sliced around complex drum machine patterns and swathes of vintage synths.

His rogue re-workings of the Cocteau Twins and Nicki Minaj are perfect examples of his talent for completely transforming the mood and tone of the original source.

The talent didn’t go unnoticed and SS has since officially been hired to remix notorious acts. The list includes none other than Gold Panda, Childish Gambino, Broken Social Scene, The Go! Team & The Morning Benders.

With 2011 already offering Teams vs. Star Slinger – 12” (on Brooklyn’s finest Mexican Summer label), a Sold Out 7” & a self-released EP (Rogue Cho Pa) – Slinger  is touring the UK / EU and beyond, rocking dancefloors and winning eardrums the world over.

Baxter Dury

RAF DADDY (THE 2 BEARS)
Old Blue Last
Tuesday 5 July 2011

£6 ADVANCE
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/BAXTERDURY

BAXTER DURY plays Old Blue Last for us this July.

On the 15th August 2011 Baxter Dury will release his third album ‘Happy Soup’ through Regal Recordings. Produced by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Portishead) and recorded in Baxter’s hometown of London, the album will be released in digital and CD format. ‘Claire’ is the first single to be taken from it, released on 1st July.

‘Happy Soup’ is worlds away from the darkness and romantic disappointments of previous LPs ‘Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift’ (2002) and ‘Floor Show’ (2005), so much so that Dury refers to his new effort as “seaside psychedelia”. Its ten tracks narrate everyday tales of dancing on the patio in Marigolds and seedy sex in Portugal, yet Baxter’s lyrical playfulness and acute character analysis ensure the songs are anything but mundane. Just take the amusing picture painted of London’s Portobello Road in love song ‘Trellic’ or ‘The Sun’ in which Madelaine Heart’s honeyed guest vocals swim in-between bursts of Baxter’s mad, infectious laughter and colourful, rippling guitars. First single ‘Claire’ meanwhile slings his cockney charm around bus fare funk and unforgettable bass hooks. It’s not quite all rainbows and carousels though – had Joy Division scored a Batman soundtrack, the looping bass and menacing spoken-drawl of ‘Picnic On The Edge’ would undoubtedly have made the cut.

‘Happy Soup’ tracklisting:

1.Isabel
2.Claire
3.Leak At The Disco
4.Afternoon
5.Happy Soup
6.Trellic
7.Picnic On The Edge
8.Hotel In Brixton
9.The Sun
10.Trophies

Plus RAF DADDY (The 2 Bears)

THE 2 BEARS – Raf Rundell and Joe Goddard – first began crossing paths in DJ Booths. Straight Outta Brompton (well, Putney) Joe spends his time away from The 2 Bears as a producer, remixer, solo-artist and one fifth of an obscure outfit called Hot Chip; fellow Sarf Londoner Raf divides his time between club promotion, DJ outings as Greco-Roman Soundsystem, radio show hosting and artiste management.

The pairs DJ booth banter, soon led to a shared enthusiasm for house music and vague plans for a musical collaboration. Raf’s existence at the music industry coal face and first hand experience of the business’ financial travails, would make Sade’s When Am I Going To Make A Living a suitably irreverent subject for their first musical foray. So began several months of hanging out, making music ‘for the fun of it’ and ‘portamental’ arguments about obscure synths, that would wind up forming the ‘Follow The Bears EP’.

Characterised by the hitherto untapped vocal stylings of Raf himself (Joe: ‘I didn’t know Raf could actually sing!’), the Bears have already received radio support from Annie Mac, Rob da Bank, Giles Peterson and Toddla T, drawn towards The 2 Bears 21st Century take on house, disco and everything in between.

“Banana Ripple” wil be released on 30th May as the first single from JUNIOR BOYS’ forthcoming album,”It’s All True”. The album began its life in Shanghai, where Jeremy Greenspan made an extended visit to write and begin recording. Traces of Greenspan’s trip can be heard in tracks such as the album opener “Itchy Fingers” whose exotic middle eight features local musicians he recorded during his stay. With much of the album composed and conceived, Greenspan returned to his native Hamilton, Ontario and was joined by Matthew Didemus to record in earnest at the band’s recently constructed studio. The result is “It’s All True” – Junior Boys’ most accomplished album to date.

An artist who continuously pushes the production envelope, MANTLER’s albums to date have each brought their own unique sound. Mantler’s first album, “Doin’ It All” (2000), was recorded almost entirely with a densely multi-tracked wurlitzer, a Rhythm Ace drum machine, and drums sampled on a primitive 1980s sampler. His second album “Sadisfaction” (2002) was more expansive, sedate and”rock”-like while the third album, “Landau” (2004), featuring tighter songs and brighter production, was intended as a tribute to the R&B sound of the late 1970s and early 1980s (the album was frequently compared to Steely Dan). Mantler’s new album, Monody, combines the best elements of the previous albums to create a grander, more epic version of his sound – the density of “Doin’ It All”, the sedate quality of “Sadisfaction”, and the songwriting focus of “Landau”.

JAPE are an Irish electronic–rock band from Dublin. Formed as a side project by Richie Egan whilst part of The Redneck Manifesto, they have released three albums to date; ‘Cosmosphere’ (2003), ‘The Monkeys in the Zoo Have More Fun Than Me’ (2004) and ‘Ritual’ (2008). The band have performed at festivals and events such as Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, Lovebox and Hard Working Class Heroes and provided support for The Flaming Lips. ‘The Monkeys…’ opening track, “Floating”, became a popular single on late night alternative music radio shows and attracted the attention of Brendan Benson who now covers the track whilst performing live with his band The Raconteurs, as do the Belgian bastard pop duo Soulwax during their DJ sets.

Plus a special after party with DJ set from MAX TUNDRA, and late curfew for post Junior Boys dancing.

“Improves upon [his previous] albums’ strengths – wide-eyed eclecticism among other things – managing greater coherence and scope than anything he’s ever done… astounding” – Cokemachineglow
“Parallax Error Beheads You is an enormous achievement, one that expands the syntax of the medium” – Momus (best album of 2008)

“It is a near masterpiece, elastic, eccentric and eclectic” – musicOMH.com
“He’s never made anything approaching a bad record before, but the greatness that Max Tundra’s turned out to be capable of still proves to be a revelation of earth-shattering proportions” – The Quietus
“Mannered English eccentricity never sounded so deliriously thrilling” – All Music Guide
“What Max has created as a result is nothing short of amazing” – Urb

“It hurts and twists your brain until you start to crave this Tundra terrorism” – NME
“Max Tundra’s music is smart, engaging, and both challenging and fun to listen to. That’s what makes it unusual, and worth treasuring” – PopMatters

“A modern landmark in sophisticated pop-song composition. Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Scritti Politti, Cornelius, Prince, Daft Punk… it manages to consistently equal and even occasionally improve upon the best work by each of those artists and then some. 10/10” – Spencer Owen (mog.com)
“He has struck gold with his masterful third release – smart and relevant” – Treble
“A million-course meal stuffed into one disc from the singular mind of an itinerant musical chef” – XLR8R (Staff Pick)

DRIVER DRIVE FASTER are a new band from Manchester, but you wouldn’t necessarily tell: this masterful debut album presents a rich, timeworn sound that exists somewhere between Americana and spectral indie rock. It’s crafted song-writing at its best, hinging on stirring chord sequences and moments of fragile beauty. “A review described us as ‘misfits’,” says singer/guitarist Dylan Giles. “We took it as a compliment.”

Named Open House and recorded in the shared digs in which the entire band reside, the album was a labour of love begun in late 2009, poured over in 2010 and set for release in 2011. The result is a lush, layered record that slowly draws you into its world. Think Mercury Rev’s Deserter’s Songs for a new generation. “We spent around nine months editing, overdubbing, mixing and tweaking every little detail until we couldn’t obsess any more,” says Dylan. “It was all self funded through working day jobs so we had no deadline, nor any expectations outside of the band’s own ambitions and ideas.”

Before the album, the single It’s All Over It’s Everywhere is released in May. A fine slice of harmony-laden pop, it’s a song about the public’s preoccupation with salacious gossip. “It started with the obsession there is of unearthing things in people’s private lives and past and moved on to the general urge to gossip and spread intrigue,” says Dylan.

Taking their name from the first line in WH Auden’s poem Calypso, in which he’s running late to meet his lover, Driver Drive Faster formed in Manchester and have, in their short career, supported The Aliens, The Phantom Band, Darwin Deez, Japandroids and more, recorded live sessions for Radio 6’s Marc Riley and received airplay on Radio 1 and Radio 2.  They will grace this summer’s festival season too with slots at Green Man, Beacons, FOM Fest and Sounds From The Other City all confirmed.

Dylan and Japan-born bassist Yuri Caul met at school in Torquay, Devon. Durham-born Peet Earnshaw joined the fold after meeting them at an open mic night in Withington, South Manchester. Completing the line-up, drummer David Schlechtriemen was recruited via a friend, who described him as ‘excellent’ but ‘very German’. “It fell into place at the first run through as a four-piece,” says Dylan. “When David left the room Yuri punched the air.”

Coming from such far-flung places, the players create a sound that’s got little to do with the music of Manchester’s past, but plenty to do with its future. “We like variation in a record; ups and downs, fast and slow, happy and sad, serious and not so serious,” says Dylan. “I guess there is a restlessness in our approach to music: in life too, as an example, David can never settle on which brand of cigarette he smokes. It’s different every time.”

Album released 20th June 2011 on Akoustik Anarkhy Recordings
Single It’s All Over It’s Everywhere released 30th May 2011 also on aA
