ERLAND & THE CARNIVAL were formed by singer/guitarist and Orkney islander Erland Cooper with ex-The Verve/The Good, The Bad & The Queen guitarist Simon Tong and drummer David Nock. Together, they produce a sound described by Tong as “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek.” In other words: folk-tinged, psyched up, fuzzed-out brilliance.

In a year which has included a much lauded collaboration with Burial, an album with legendary Jazz drummer Steve Reid and celebrated DJ sets around the world, FOUR TET aka Kieran Hebden announces select UK dates, including London’s Dome in Tufnel Park in support of his new album.

There Is Love In You is Kieran Hebden’s first full length album in over four years and is his fifth LP to date. The brilliant 12” single Love Cry, backed with the track Our Bells, is
a brilliant specimen of his ability to blend esoteric inclinations with his love of the dancefloor. The live-sounding drums, gorgeously nuanced textures and blissful samples couldn’t really come from anyone else, especially when enveloped well into the track and the vocal loops begin to peel off into a deep house-meets-krautrock coda executed with that signature sleight of hand. The b-side is a sublime, beatless, gamelan influenced piece, radiating incandescent ambient harmonics with a lustrous psychedelic blur.

There’s already a deserved hype around 22 year old JOY ORBISON, thanks in no small part to Blackdown’s Pitchfork feature that focused on the producer and the impact his track, “Hyph Mngo,” is having on the heated dances London is currently playing host to. Orbison practices the art of the subtle synth hook, melodic swells washing over intoxicating UK garage clatter.

From Brighton, ESBEN AND THE WITCH are a band still in their infancy but that’s not stopping the world outside their bathroom taking a keen interest in the “nightmare pop” they’re brewing .

Recording with equipment old and new, the three-piece’s first recordings were collected as 33, a demo-cum-EP that immediately attracted its share of discerning ears. You can download it for free here. They have since released a track (‘Skeleton Swoon’) with Dance To The Radio for their 4 x 12” Series and now announce their debut single, ‘Lucia, At The Precipice’ b/w ‘They Use Smiles To Bury You’, as a 7” for release through the Too Pure Singles Club on February 8th 2010. This release will be limited to 500 individually numbered copies and, like all releases on the rejuvenated label, once it has sold out, it won’t get a repressing.

To coincide with this release, the band will embark on their first UK headline tour. They have spent this year wisely, playing numerous shows with the likes of The xx, Fiery Furnaces, Sian Alice Group and Deerhunter alongside festival appearances including End of the Road, honing the band’s stagecraft and fuelling a further flow of comparisons – such as PJ Harvey, Portishead, Kate Bush, Björk, Radiohead circa ‘Kid A’, Cocteau Twins – all of which are flattering, but none are quite correct.

PRESS QUOTES:
“Instantly captivating… Like walking into a hidden attic full of ancient maps, portraits, furniture and ephemera… Romantic and gothic, a shadow of something intangible and otherworldly.”
The Quietus

“They channel literature, nature and sorrow to create hauntingly ethereal tales of dark, foreboding menace.”
The Guardian

“Sonic fairytales with gentle yet portentous beginnings, which gather you up and lead you on short journeys to climatic and momentous points.”
Drowned in Sound

“A haunting, evocative blend of electronica, gothic melancholia, and the dynamics of post-rock… Startlingly accomplished for a new group.”
The Stool Pigeon

“Dark, sensual cinematic fusion that blends the hi-tech with the traditional… A flow of music that would have the Mercury judging panel salivating, their pulses racing and gushing plaudits out one after another.”
Loud & Quiet

“There’s just a glimmer of romance in Rachel’s icy vocals but the skeletal percussion and eerie keys are gorgeously bleak and sinister.”
Rock Sound (Bands To Watch 2010)

SBTRKT – He’s got the airwaves in a stir with Mary Anne Hobbs, Annie Mac, Mistajam, Benji B, Rob Da Bank Toddla T, Sinden and Gilles Peterson singing his praises. Recently SBTRKT has wrapped up remixes for Basement Jaxx, Modeselektor, Portico Quartet and These New Puritans. With solo releases forthcoming on the Young Turks, Brainmath and Ramp Recordings stables, look out for ltd release 12”s, a new album and further remixes from one of the hottest new UK producers…Sbtrkt is the elusive London based producer making some of the freshest beats around.

Eat Your Own Ears hosts Fabric’s Room 2 as a one off in January bringing you a DJ set from KIERAN HEBDEN (AKA FOUR TET) whose new album, due next year comes highly anticipated after the release of the brilliant Love Cry, which made priority playlists accross the board.

Pioneering dj JAMES HOLDEN plays his first ever set at Fabric. As with his productions, James Holden’s DJ sets draw in elements of house, electro, breakbeat, techno and genres that probably haven’t even got a name. As far from ‘minimal’ as you could possible get, simply because there is so much to draw you into this weird and wonderful hazy musical world – James Holden is the man to get even the most jaded dance music aficionado excited about music again.

BBC Radio One’s one to watch in 2010 GOLD PANDA plays a live set that takes the audience to an achingly beautiful realm.

Plus the amazing FLOATING POINTS

As if that wasn’t enough, in the other rooms:

MEMORY TAPES is a one man band based in New Jersey. He’s been dropping bombs (as memory cassette and weird tapes) on Gorilla vs Bear through 2008 to huge acclaim and massive blog proliferation. His sound is nostalgic both aesthetically and emotionally – so there is little surprise when comparisons drift to outfits such as Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, New Order and Boards of Canada. More established pop references come through as well with echoes of classic Motown and girl groups. Ever prolific, MEMORY TAPES intends to make two albums a year, promising that the next one will a psychedelic girl group record.

The Los Angeles quintet makes music that crackles with frenetic beats, agile melodies and cascading harmonies, tightly assembled in songs that advocate, in varying degrees of exuberance and wonderment. Their harmonic style is indicative of the influence of hazy beach bums of 60s SoCal and zombified Brit pop, while their percussion philosophy derives from somewhere more natural: a unifying connection between the five-piece developed over hours spent living together in their own guerilla hideaway in Silverlake, California. The album has the warmth and instant attraction of hearing the Fleet Foxes, mid period Talking Heads or Band of Horses for the first time, and will be available 2nd November.
The new single Camera Talk is available now as a download and 7″ with exclusive artwork by the band and a cover of Talking Heads ‘Warning Sign’ as the b-side. We are very lucky to have them back in the UK in January for a one off show at Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen with special guests. The first 50 people to arrive will also get a free Local Natives 7″.

London based neo-post punk electronic resistance force DETACHMENTS are going to be ones to watch in 2010. Layering sparse, tweaking acid house production over post-punk ESG percussive beats and chunky bass should make for a hands-in-the-air experience – and it does, but only in the sense that Detachments have taken you at gunpoint. Their first single was cut with the help of uber-producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence & The Machine, Little Boots) with whom the band will be recording their debut album with in early 2010. Other impressive producer credits include Tim Goldsworthy and Andrew Weatherall.
