MARK KOZELEK is known for covering songs from bands not normally associated to his genre of slow, introspective music. They are more than traditional covers, as they are extensively re-worked and re-interpreted to the point that they are often not recognizable to the originals, and take on a different meaning despite the lyrics remaining intact word-for-word. Kozelek’s 2000 solo debut Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer featured covers of songs by AC/DC and John Denver.

His solo 2001 follow-up, What’s Next to the Moon was an entire album of AC/DC songs done in his typically languid, hypnotically melancholy acoustic style. Even further back, Songs for a Blue Guitar, the 1996 Red House Painters album, featured covers of Yes’s Long Distance Runaround, Paul McCartney & Wings’s Silly Love Songs and The Cars’ “All Mixed Up”. 2005’s Tiny Cities is very much in this tradition, taking the often frenetic, noisy songs of Modest Mouse and transforming them into haunting, acoustic guitar-dominated midtempo ballads filled with a deep-seated, haunting melancholy.

His most recent studio release, “The Finally LP” got good reviews from the likes of NME and Pitchfork, with the later saying that the uncharacterist “looseness of the tracklist allows him to indulge some punishing metal riffs and howling emo madman vocals. Yeah, right. Kozelek is the king of somber and of course gives these covers his signature reading: slow, melancholy, full of stoic vocals and steady, shimmery guitar. This solemn take doesn’t work against the LP, but in its favor. The Finally LP is Kozelek’s own tribute of sorts, a nod to his array of idols and influences.” Kozlek will be bringing this unexpected yet excellent collection of songs along with his wide array of covers to a highly aniticipated show at Union Chapel in August…

Portland, Oregon artist Yacht aka The Blow’s Jona Bechtolt returns to London to play Hoxton Bar and Kitchen.

His songs are wide and warm-hearted. What makes them so accessible – apart from their undeniable vigour, or their fractured, crystalline pop sensibility – is the strength of their objective. Behind the beats and the choruses, which come from left-field and bloom into frenetic dance breaks, are big ideas about how positive thinking, optimism, and luck can replace blind faith in a world without a lot of white gloves, or magic.

Bechtolt has been a promiscuous genre-smasher since his adolescence, when he decided that
playing drums in the touring punk band he formed with his older brother was more worthwhile than attending a single day of high school. He has plied his unique breed of laptop wizardry and grunge intuition to endless collaborations, both as drummer and producer, with west coast mainstays like Devandra Banhart, Panther, Mt. Eerie, Bobby Birdman and E* Rock. Yacht shows are uncluttered inspiring sessions of improbable dance moves and synchronized crowd-waving; the songs shudder happily into the air, and any relation-ship to ‘laptop music’ is shattered by Bechtolt’s own strain of shamanistic bombast.

“YACHT smells wonderful. I must say, all the time he spent in our bus, it was as if a cool breeze was blowing through my mind. and good songs, too!”
– James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem

“YACHT = megaphysical.”
– Devendra Banhart

“Positive energy rainbow dome music from a next-generation west coast healer.”
– Dave Longstreth, Dirty Projectors

VONDELPARK play a special free show at the Shacklwell Arms in support of their brilliant new EP.

Formed last spring after a trip to LA by Lewis Rainsbury, Alex Bailey and Matt Law, VONDELPARK early work found release on the Sauna EP, a record that explored the emotional blankness of modern life – plane travel, jet lag, interaction and long distance relationships, yet crackling between Lewis’ haunted voice and haunting vocal samples, Sauna was a work of precocious emotional depth and density. Home recorded and lo-fi, it blended cut-and-paste sampled beats and longingly minimal guitar lines, yet the complexity of arrangements and layers of sounds were made to feel natural and simplistic.

Their second EP, nyc bags and nyc stuff, develops on the musical themes of Sauna. Still anchored by Lewis’ tender vocals it’s more abstract in its sampling and feels more musically cohesive. Rather than dealing with the emotional alienation of modernity nyc bags instead feels deeply personal, an exploration of the internal rather than external.

Opening track ‘TV’ maybe best exemplifies their use of samples and the way they are built around original work, constructing stuttering melodic evocations that grow from a single repetitive loop to mingle with a sparkling guitar and implacable snatches of vocals. When the beats kick in over the refrain of ‘Colder, faster, TV’ it climaxes so subtly it could almost be missed. Second track ‘Feat B’ is the EP’s most straightforward, almost encroaching on r’n’b in its structure and influence, drawing on the genre’s sentimentality and slow jams and underpinned by a female vocal. Like much of the work on nyc bags the vocals are manipulated in a way that the original sense of what’s been used, sampled and recorded is deviated from to leave just its abstract imprint and after listening for long enough the distinction between original recording and sampling becomes blurred beyond recognition. Like ‘Feat B’, ‘Camels’ also takes something from r’n’b, but more conspicuously draws on the beats of the UK underground, it is instrumentally dense and vast, in which guitars and samples seem to entangle and intertwine with each other in expressive knots. ‘Hipbone’ mixes the plaintive overlapping vocals with hypnotic keys and mournful echoing horns, like all of Vondelpark’s music it is simplistic yet never simplified, whilst both touching and poignant. It’s left to ‘Outro For nyc’ to slowly bring us to the EP’s end, like a shadow of the whole work, or travelling back from a club at six am, with the echoes of that night’s music reverberating inside your head, the increasingly faint resonations of sub and treble that interplay with whatever your taxi driver is listening too as you glide under streetlights, only half-aware of where you’re going.

After the acclaimed ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ album in 2007 and success of the accompanying tour, the band took a three year sabbatical to catch up on some of the other important things in life. Now they’re back for a short, sharp run of dates this summer, with a set drawn from their four albums over the past decade.
