ATLAS SOUND is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman/provocateur Bradford Cox, so named since 1994, when a sixth-grade Bradford made recordings on a karaoke cassette machine bearing the words ‘Atlas Sound’.

Though it was Cox’s earliest musical incarnation, it wasn’t until 2008 that the first Atlas Sound album emerged, Let The Blind Lead Those Who See But Cannot Feel. The genesis of the record can be traced back to those sixth-grade musical experiments; a time when he discovered through reading a Beck interview that his family’s disused karaoke machine could be used as a rudimentary multi-tracking device. As Cox’s tirelessly updated blog attests, with its caverns of freely available covers, demos and mixtapes, such recording processes are central to his music, colouring the intimate feel of Atlas Sound in a manner more apparent than when writing under the guise of Deerhunter.

If its predecessor was a record of fragile beauty and acute experimentalism that spoke of its bedroom genesis, the second Atlas Sound album, Logos, arrived in 2009 with a far more rooted pop sensibility. Featuring collaborations with Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox and Laetitia Sadler of Stereolab, the album expanded on the often-insular tendencies of the first Atlas Sound record, this time outward gazing and almost sunshine loving in its ebullience. Moving away from piercing introspection and towards a grand pop plateau, Cox managed to translate his music into a more universally engaging form while retaining the intimate charms of the project.

Citing “ideas that I can’t make work with a five piece rock band” as the basis of his solo material, Cox’s work as Atlas Sound represents a feral and prolific musical voice. With its scorched beauty, stream of consciousness, and wonderfully cohesive pop narrative, Atlas Sound is another outlet for Cox’s relentless creativity, distinctly remaining the product of just one man’s vision.

Gorgeous George return to the Shacklewell Arms in July

Gorgeous George can only be described as one of the most exciting live and recording acts to have emerged from London in recent times. Their original and completely unique blend of Eastern European folk musics with a distinctly youthful South London wisp has been leaving audiences with their jaws dropped for just under a year now. They deliver hillarious tales of frighteningly believable and relative characters that make listening to them feel like one big fly on the wall documentary in a council estate, married with a musical skill, knowledge and stage presence which is rarely, if ever, seen in a band so young and new.’

Experimental pop artists BLEEDING HEART NARRATIVE now reside in East London. Starting out as the solo project of Oliver Barrett, the project has evolved in to an impressive collection of uniquely skilled multi-instrumentalists. The sextet weave together beautiful sounds with a haunting intensity and yet always with an eye on pop experimentation. They incorporate their more abstract influences into traditional song structures, applying pop sensibilities to them as they go. You might hear the shimmer of Tortoise or Steve Reich built into a song that could be played on an Arcade Fire-sized stage, or pick out a Battle-esque repetition in a Mogwai-sized crescendo – but it’ll always be Bleeding Heart Narrative you’re listening to.

Praise for Bleeding Heart Narrative:

“… a six-piece experimental pop outfit, they cemented their place in our affections last year with a beautiful performance at London’s Union Chapel. – The Best of CMU Approved 2011

“… proving just how brilliantly diverse a five-track EP can be when its creators are truly inventive and unwilling to settle for even an ounce of filler ” – Line of Best Fit

“…. BHN can also boast a warm pop sensibility and bold approach to polyrhythmic arranging that set them apart from the pack.” – The Stool Pigeon

“…an excellent band. Top marks.” –  Norman Records, 5/5

“Bleeding Heart Narrative’s EP may be the most exciting thing to come out of the UK in recent years. ” – The 405, 9.5/10

” barely-contained rapture ”  – Band of the Week – Beardrock

” …developing into serious contenders for the ‘next big thing’ intercontinental title.”– Track of the Day – Livemusic FM
“a sound entirely their own, playing off the beautiful and haunting, while mixing a stirring ambiance with an vibrant, paean immediacy” – Folk Radio , 4/5

LOST LEFT have a vast sound with shifting movements, resounding guitars and an other wordly sense in the lyrics, that hints towards, if anyone, Lift To Experience or perhaps British Sea Power. Live, the band has grown a reputation for a heavy driven sound and unexpected turns.

MAX BONDI is an electronic musician and owner/founder of Tartaruga Records. He Recently released his second album under his own name – ‘Convolution’ – on Tartaruga Records, described as uncompromising machine music, electrical rather than electronic.

TWIN SHADOW

Dingwalls
Wednesday 4 July 2012

THETWINSHADOW.TUMBLR.COM/

The one and only TWIN SHADOW comes to Dingwalls this July.

The name might as well be a movie title: Twin Shadow in … Forget. Only it’s not a movie; it’s a panoramic LP that introduces us to the twilight zone tale of George Lewis Jr.

The troubled son of a hairdresser and a “teacher who lived many lives” (semi-pro football, massage therapy, film maker and other things we’ll tell you about when you’re older), George was born in the Dominican Republic and spent his formative years in Florida. Not in a happening spot like Miami, though. Try an island that happened to be the winter home base of the Ringling Brothers’ Circus and palm tree-flanked old people.

If you think that’s strange? You don’t know the half of it. And neither does George, although he’s trying to remember; trying to piece the sepia-toned scenes together along with a debut album that’s all about letting go. Or is it? Like an art-house double feature that leaves you wondering what the hell just happened in the best way possible, Forget tells a spellbinding story without spelling everything out.

Forget isn’t tethered to any trends or specific genre, either. Instead, it seems almost to be hovering above the landscape of decades gone past; checking in at rest stops with it’s wheels pointed directly toward the future. So don’t be surprised to hear things abruptly shift from synth-swept soundscapes (“I Can’t Wait,” “Castles In the Snow”) to glimmers of gossamer dance music (“For Now,” “Shooting Holes At the Moon”) or full-on power balladry (“Slow”).

And who is that sitting next to George’s director’s chair? Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear in the role of producer, working closely with Twin Shadow, fine-tuning Forget’s special effects while maintaining the memory-wracked mood that George spent months perfecting in his Brooklyn apartment. Brooklyn based label Terrible Records will be taking Twin Shadow’s Forget on as their very first LP release.

“It’s bedroom recorded music, but it’s been done with the same attention as many classic B-movies,” he says. “It’s not like a slapdash home video, though; it’s someone operating with very little at 100-percent of their ability.”

In other words, Forget is like The Seventh Seal filtered through the drive-in feel of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Meaning: lots of tight shots, careful lighting, and a lingering sense that something’s not quite right—a film adaptation of George’s life that’s essentially a 40-minute waking dream.
