BORN RUFFIANS offer up a sweet blend of harmonies and inventive arrangements, songs full of sweet, foot-stomping brouhaha. The Old Blue Last will reverberate with their energetic holler in this special small show.

YOUNG RIVAL hails from a city most widely-known for its blue-collar work ethic – a quality that Young Rival have always proudly embraced. With a sound that is both raw and hazy, dark and melodic, this band delivers an undeniably unique brand of grit-infused, wildcat rock and roll. Their latest offering comes to us in the form of an amazing collection of songs, recorded in June 2009 by Polaris Prize winning record maker Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club, Arkells).

Unfortunately we have had to postpone the upcoming JUANA MOLINA show. To get a refund please contact the ticket outlet you purchased your ticket from. We’re very sorry about this but keep your eyes peeled, a new date is to be announced soon.

JUANA MOLINA is back with a show at the lovely Union Chapel.

This native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, can, perhaps rather cheekily, be seen as having kickstarted the new generation of performers who begin with their core group of instruments and a delay pedal, and take the relatively experimental approach of live sound-looping and manipulation to the pop-concert medium. Think Kama Aina, Animal Collective. She uses time-delay for a sense of disorientation and twisting beauty, to heighten her songs’ moods and structures. The hypnotic live experience is built of layer upon layer of polyrhythms, dissonant synth melodies, and effected voices. Her music is in love with texture and timbre, and despite its leftfield leanings it is a wondrous and accessible song she sings.

ERLAND AND THE CARNIVAL were formed by singer/guitarist and Orkney islander Erland Cooper with ex-The Verve/The Good, The Bad & The Queen guitarist Simon Tong and drummer David Nock. Together, they produce a sound described by Tong as “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek.” In other words: folk-tinged, psyched up, fuzzed-out brilliance.

Calgary’s Woodpigeon will return to our shores for a series of beautiful shows in May to

celebrate the release of their new album ‘Die Stadt Muzikanten’, out on End of

the Road Records on the 19th April.

WOODPIGEON’s chamber-folk concoctions of banjo, glockenspiel, choir and Mark Hamilton’s diffident vocals make for thoughtful melodious moments and joyous rock-outs. Combining the mystical comic-book fantasies of Mark’s lyrics with the sparkling music of the band, comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and his delightful ilk aren’t far wrong, setting Woodpigeon up to be the next great Canadian breakout band.

It never gets old, this touring lark. Just the fact that there’s people around this world of ours who want to

hear songs written in a small, pink house in the prairies of Canada always makes me smile. We look

forward to entertaining you this spring.”

– Mark Andrew Hamilton, Woodpigeon.

Fronted by Mark Hamilton, Woodpigeon’s music moves and contorts like a

film soundtrack.  Lush, grand moments complement Mark’s signature

cinematic “pretty-pretty-pop” sound.    ‘Die Stadt Muzikanten’ will be the

band’s third full-length and follow up to the internationally acclaimed album

‘Treasury Library Canada’.

In the past, Woodpigeon has most often operated as a rotating collective of

players. This tour however, kicks off with a warm-up show in Iceland on 29th

April with an assembly of what Mark describes as doubtlessly his favourite

group of players.

“On the drums, Mr. Chris Dadge (who I’ve come to call The Glimmer) brings in an element of

experimental improv – when he’s not hitting things for Woodpigeon, he’s running the

experimental record label Bug Incision and releasing records by an amazing group of

otherworldly experimenters. Woodpigeon’s violin player Foon Yap has also been spreading

her wings as of late, fronting the almighty FOONYAP + The Roar, opening for folks like

HEALTH and, erm, Woodpigeon. Scott Munro (on bass and horns), AKA “Monty”, plays with

other Calgary greats like Ghostkeeper and Chad VanGaalen, and Annalea Sordi-McClure

who isn’t just one of the original Woodpigeon line-up, but also the greatest housemate I’ve

ever had. She heard all of these songs first, before anyone, and if I caught her humming one

around the house, I knew it was a good one.”

PRAISE FOR ‘TREASURY LIBRARY CANADA’

“4**** Bloody marvelous” – Sunday Times

“4**** Seductive” – MOJO

“4**** an inspiring meditation on exile and return” – Guardian

“4**** Melodic and affecting.” – Q

“Delightful … poetic and effortlessly gorgeous.” -THE WORD

“Lovely … relevant, modern and orchestral … these are songs for a range of emotion.” -THE NATIONAL POST

“Extravagant shows of brasses or strings spiral out … Hamilton’s light, resilient voice is tailor-made for mulling on the deceits and realities of what we see and do.” -THE GLOBE AND MAIL

“Strings soar … and voices blend like a cool breeze hitting the ocean mist … Woodpigeon take flight with an ease that their name wouldn’t make you believe.” -EXCLAIM!

“Understated beauty with an unshakable longing … meet your new indie folk heroes.” -SUBBA-CULTCHA

“Hamilton’s delightfully dour and lovelorn lyrics and sprightly, sweetly mellow music, makes the morse seem wholly palatable … accomplished, quietly intelligent, playful and really rather enchanting.” -BBC

“Rich acoustic chamber pop with quietly barbed lyrics.” -UNCUT

“A tapestry of plaintive guitar, shuffling snare drums, twinkling glockenspiel and handclaps … from swirling blizzard chamber-pop to hushed alt.country … adrift in sweeping landscapes.” -METRO

“A perfect balance of grandeur and intimacy, delight and melancholy. Treasury is a left-field gem … you can’t help but fall in love with.” -CHROMEWAVES

“The next great Canadian breakout band.” -NOW

LAURA GIBSON’s new album Beasts of Seasons (out now) is nothing short of a masterpiece, both for its flawless and often haunting execution and for its inspired statements on the human experience. If it’s the sonic equivalent of darkness and what may be lurking there, then Gibson’s fragile voice and plaintively strummed guitar soon emerge as a flicker of light. It’s a mesmerizing contrast, as the curtain rises for Gibson’s beautifully gloomy and arresting meditations on life and death

WITHERED HAND
is the work of one man from Edinburgh, Dan Willson. Despite a lyrical admission to listening to death metal bands, Dan makes pensive and pretty ‘antifolk’ music sprawling with all sorts of questions and quiet conversations while his Neil Young-ish voice mingles joyously with varied accompaniments including that of a banjo, harmonica and mandolin.

The Temper Trap round off a spectacular 2009 with the news of another London show added to their previously announced UK tour for Spring of next year. Due to phenomenal demand the band have now confirmed a third night at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on 30th April.

Hailing from Melbourne, Dougy, Lorenzo, Jonathon and Toby came to England earlier this year and have toured the UK and taken their exhilarating live show to festivals across the world. Their breakthrough single ‘Sweet Disposition’ became the anthem of the summer and climbed the UK charts for over 10 weeks ending up in the top ten and selling a staggering 250,000 copies. The album ‘Conditions’ garnered great reviews and achieved silver status six weeks after release. A new single ‘Fader’ is out January 4th.

The Temper Trap are also nominated for four awards at the ARIA Awards (Australian Record Industry Association) which takes place later this month. ‘Conditions’ is shortlisted for Album of The Year, Best Rock Album, Breakthrough Artist (album) and ‘Sweet Disposition’ for Single of the Year.

We are pleased to announce CARIBOU is back, bringing his euphoric music to Corsica studios where he and a full band will play a live set on Tuesday 20th April. After a three-year gap since his last release ‘Andorra’ Dan Snaith AKA Caribou will play in support of the greatly anticipated album ‘Swim’ released on the show day.

Snaith described the album’s sound thusly: “I got excited by the idea of making dance music that’s liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan… Dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does.

The new single release ‘Odessa’ has been receiving 8/10 reviews, and a “best new music” review from Pitchfork.

This year we will see a dramatic difference in the Caribou live performance. Now that technology has finally caught up to Dan’s ambitions for the band’s show, while it will still be four musicians on stage, the dynamic interplay between visuals, electronics and the live sound will be taken to the next level.

NEW ALBUM SWIM will be released on the show day, 20 April 2010 and if you think you know Caribou, think again. Dan Snaith’s new album is the sound of the musical glass ceiling being blown away.

Swim is full of brightly textured, rapturous gems that gleam with astonishing production – and then wrenches at your heart with soulful, thoughtful reveries on the passing of time, family history and the breakdown of relationships. “There are songs about growing old in a relationship, about divorce and loneliness in old age but the lyrics are generally pretty abstract sketches of what’s going on in the situation in my head.”

We can’t think of another multi-instrumentalist/ producer/ songwriter/ singer/ arranger/ composer who has the ability to harness all these talents into something as breathtakingly gorgeous yet dance floor ready as Dan Snaith AKA Caribou.

GOLD PANDA started writing beats and collaborating a few years ago, working with the likes of Infinite Livez and Shuttle (both Ninja Tune) as well as creating his own material.

Having spent downtime behind the counters of various establishments of ill repute – finding out that record stores and adult stores are no less seedier than each other, he consolidated the rest of his hours creating archives of electronic music; each track different from the other, incorporating multitudes of styles and disparate influences and obscure samples and base material. This led to a series of raved-about remixes, with requests from the likes of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco and Health.

What does it sound like? One writer claimed that: “He intuitively mixes lopsided, chopped up hip hop style beats with a gorgeous refined melodic techno sensibility creating a fresh cross genre sound that’s distinct and accomplished.” Which sounds pretty good, so let’s go with that. The second half of 2009 will see Gold Panda touring with Simian Mobile Disco and adding to his three EP releases this year already with new material. Plus generally pushing on and consolidating his quickly burgeoning reputation as one of the brightest names in the electronic scene.

HOUNDS OF HATE is a London-based three-person project which began in ’09. The music is a resurrection of acid house basslines fused with half-speed screwed & chopped drums, giving “soft-core screw house”. HH do not adhere to analog or digital but embrace limitations of old equipment, arriving at a not very hi-fi sound. They often mix around with Hype Williams and the Bo Khat Family band, spawning mixtapes, aborted radio talk shows and befuddled audiences.

SILVER COLUMNS had already built up a cult fanbase with their first two limited edition, white label singles, but with “Cavalier”, their first “proper” release on the perennially tastemaking label Moshi Moshi, they have revealed their unexpected alter egos as Adem and Pictish Trail and are ready to go overground and take their rightful place in the pantheon of offbeat electro pop greats.

This prime club fodder runs the gamut from high energy dancefloor pop to electro and disco, composed of a battalion of synths, dizzying rush of pinballing beats, urgent keyboard lines and deceptively sweet, plaintive vocals.

JUSTIN ROBERTSON began as a DJ in Manchester and his early 90s clubs – Spice and Most Excellent – were hugely influential and cornerstones of the burgeoning dance movement. The Chemical Brothers, then students in the city, cited him as their mentor. His Rebellious Jukebox club – also in Manchester – pre-empted the Heavenly Social and the mid 90s trend for mish-mashing musical styles. In the 90s Justin generally operated under various nom de stages, the most renowned being Lionrock with whom he scored several Top 40s hits.

Justin is still working successfully in areas as diverse as techno, house, dancehall and art pop, as well as remixing the likes of The Whip, Bjork and Felix Da Housecat, compiling and mixing Harmless records brilliant Art of Acid compilation and still manages to fit in DJing all over the world.

ÓLÖF ARNALDS

DAVID THOR JONSSON
Café Oto
Thursday 15 April 2010

£8.00
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/OLOFARNALDS

In spite of her young age ÓLÖF ARNALDS has been active on the Icelandic experimental scene for many years. She played with electronica virtuosos Múm between 2003 and 2007, and her debut album ‘Vid og Vid’ was produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Icelandic greats, Sigur Rós. Arnalds tells personal tales with a tender voice and leaves the impression of a classic troubadour with clear associations to early freak-folkers like Vashti Bunyan and Judee Sill or todays Joanna Newsom.

Her talent not only reveals itself in the variety of the instruments she masters, but also in her beautiful labyrinthine songwriting and mesmerizing solo performances. Ólöf’s voice has been singled out for high praise as “otherworldly” by The New York Times, “stunning” by SPIN, “remarkable” by the NME, “ethereal” by Vanity Fair and “impossibly lovely” by Paste.

Ólöf recently finished mixing her second album, Innundir skinni at Sundlaugin Studios with Kjartan Sveinsson producing once again. Innundir skinni features more elaborate arrangements and instrumentation than Við og Við, with vocals sung both in English and Icelandic. Innundir skinni is set for worldwide release this Spring.

“…Reykjavik’s answer to Kate Bush…her debut is a spare, troubadour-like affair garnished with haunting, witch-child vocals.”  MOJO (4/5)

“…her voice is high and clear, with a gentle quaver that humanizes its otherworldly purity.”  The New York Times

“..Olof Arnalds has the kind of voice that can silence a room, such is its sweetness. And high-profile fans such as Björk have been very vocal about Arnalds’ awesome talent.”  Time Out New York

RAIN MACHINE is the new solo project from TV ON THE RADIO’s Kyp Malone. Kyp describes his album as “a nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear, a reflection of a variety of emotions and situations real and imagined – some rhythm some rhyme.” This statement is grounded by Malone’s skills as a songwriter, proven in his years as TVOTR’s singer and guitarist.

This very personal music features a mixture of elements of modern jazz, blue-grass and blistering guitar driven rock into a refreshing new sound, the sound of an extraordinary artist emerging into his own.
