Thecocknbullkid – aka Anita Blay – is pro-pop. A pop star in the making for 2009. She wants to make a splash. Not just in one corner, but all over the mainstream. And she is going to do it on her own terms. She makes music that is new, that is forward-thinking – music that takes chances. ‘Im Not Sorry’ is a perfect demonstration of this. 2008 saw thecocknbullkid really begin to come into her own. After appearing at all the major festivals, she performed live on Later with Jools Holland, as well as supporting the likes of CSS, Late Of The Pier and Metronomy. She is currently holed up in the studio, working with Mark Anthony Tieku, Blue May (who produced I’m Not Sorry), Joe Mount and Dave McCracken.

Her influences come from across the musical spectrum – Madonna and Little Richard, Grace Jones and Morrissey – nothing is off limits. Musically adventurous, thecocknbullkid marries this to a darker lyrical side. There is always something more sinister in her songs, something real. And no more so than in ‘I’m Not Sorry’. The song is about being nasty, but being nasty and not feeling bad about it. Its incredibly honest. And its honesty that shapes all her songs. The dark side is out there and its real. Just like thecocknbullkid.

thecocknbullkid will be performing her biggest UK headline show to date on 11th March when she appears at the ICA.

TOUR CANCELLED DUE TO FIRE….

hello all……very sad news from GGD camp today. We are in Amsterdam after having played the first of what was meant to be 14 shows in Europe and the UK. Last nights show was really great and a big thank you to everyone that came out for it….we had a blast, but unfortunately our morning was a bit tragic. We stored our gear in the club last night and when we arrived there today to pick it up and head off to Brussels for tonights show, we were informed that an electrical fire had occurred in the very room where our stuff was stashed.

We didnt really know the scope of how bad the fire was until we arrived on the scene to find every piece of equipment we own scattered out in the parking lot…melted, charred, and still smoldering. Most of our gear is way beyond repair and the small amount of stuff that looks as if it wasnt physically destroyed by the fire itself has all been doused by the firehoses. So we have been left with synths that are melted, a charred guitar, cases full of wet pedals and cables, drums that are nothing but the metal rims, amps that look as if they’ve been doused in tar…the list goes on.

It is really devastating for us as our equipment is very specific and without it we cant do much of anything. Most of our memory cards for our samplers melted so we’ve lost a bunch of jams that we were really looking forward to playing for you all. While we did entertain the thought of just renting or borrowing a bunch of random gear and somehow continuing the tour and just improvising every night, it just doesn’t seem like its going to work out. While it would be fun and we’d love to stick this out for everyone that was excited to see us, we feel like we came to perform a certain set of songs and if we cant do that then its probably best to just come back again when we have the necessary gear to do so. On top of that we are stuck here in Amsterdam until we are able to meet with the insurance company that is dealing with the fire, if we were to leave then we would risk losing out on the compensation that will be necessary for us to build our equipment back up.

As i said its all really devastating and we wish nothing more then to be in Brussels tonight (we were super excited about that show!) and to be able to continue on with our tour, but there is really no way for that to happen given the circumstances.
We are hoping to come back asap and make up for all this and we really want to thank everyone who bought tickets and everyone who was planning on coming out to the shows on this tour. It looked as if it was going to be one of our best yet thanks to y’all…….
See you when the smoke clears. peace and respect——GGD

Calgary’s WOODPIGEON’s chamber-folk concoctions of banjo, glockenspiel, choir and Mark Hamilton’s diffident vocals make for thoughtful melodious moments and joyous rock-outs. Combining the mystical comic-book fantasies of Mark’s lyrics with the sparkling music of the band, comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and his delightful ilk aren’t far wrong, setting Woodpigeon up to be the next great Canadian breakout band.

Members of the community-spirited, DIY-championing Wilkommen collective, THE MISERABLE RICH are James de Malplaquet and Will Calderbank, sometime members of Lightspeed Champion’s band, and producers of beautifully arranged string sections and acoustic songwriting.

FENCE COLLECTIVE

HMS GINAFORE
KING CREOSOTE (SOLO)
PIP DYLAN + UNCLE BEESLY
Bethnal Green Working Mens Club
Wednesday 11 February 2009

£12.50

The legendary FENCE COLLECTIVE of Fife come Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club for a special show.

In 1995, St Andrews born singer-songwriter Kenny Anderson (a.k.a. KING CREOSOTE) was very much alone. His bluegrass band, the Skhoubie Dubh Orchestra, was in tatters, and he was left with only a digital 8-track and CD burner for comfort. Fast-forward to 2008, and the man finds himself as leader of The Fence Collective – a loose-knit amalgam of singer-songwriters, musicians, bands and electronic artists, who collaborate with one another on record, as well as on stage.

The albums he’s recorded in the past 5 years for Domino (Kenny & Beth’s Musakal Boat Rides, and Rocket DIY) and Warners (KC Rules OK, and Bombshell) have brought him to a large international audience. He’s a man who is very much loved, by music lovers and musicians alike.

The first-lady of Fence, H.M.S. GINAFORE is the pseudonym of Anstruther born singer-songwriter, Jenny Casino.

She writes incredible sea-shanties about small town life, with lyrics that won’t leave you alone for the rest of your days. One of the more reluctant performers on Fence, a healthy swig of port or gin is enough to transform the “shy” assistant curator of the Anstruther Fisheries Museum into the bawdy balladeer HMS Ginafore, and her rare shows are a must see.

Twin sibling to Lone Pigeon, PIP DYLAN’s acoustic country sounds set a new acoustic standard for all Fencers to strive towards. Swap Beatles and Barret influences for Wainwright and Dylan, and you might get some idea of what twins can achieve thru’ sheer accident of birth.

UNCLE BEESLY is mostly a bass player but is sometimes known for his bizarro country-punk guitar playing with elmo rockers Gummi Bako. He has played with many Fence luminaries…too many to mention here but suffice to say – they were big and they were luminous.

THERE WILL ONLY EVER BE 3 SIX INCH RECORDS RELEASES. THERE WILL ONLY EVER BE 333 COPIES OF EACH RELEASE.

SIX INCH RECORDS is the project of artist and RADIOHEAD collaborator STANLEY DONWOOD, the man responsible for most of the band’s artwork since My Iron Lung back in 1994. Working with Thom Yorke on the brilliant artwork for Amnesiac, Stanley won a Grammy award in 2002.

Tonight he launches his record label with two of the three featured artists, THE JOY OF LIVING and MAX DE MARA in the opulent surrounds of the parlour at Sketch, who’ll be offering special cheap drinks for the night.

THE JOY OF LIVING create a gentle but colourful collision of acoustic and electronic instrumentation – evolving into a body of music that embraces a myriad of genres and styles. From Sunshine Pop to Cosmic German, Film Soundtrack, Folk, Experimental with an ocasional hint of Latin and Funk. The Joy Of Living continue to “…plough their own peculiar, quintessentially English furrow of baroque Psychedelia, where wordless Jazz/Folk harmonies, breeze gently into the liquid pulse of vintage Electronica..”

Composer, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist MAX DE WARDNER is an arch-experimentalist whose work weaves an atmospheric tapestry of gentle oratorio, tonal grandeur and shimmering, cut-up electronics. MARA CARLYLE is one of the most extraordinary singer-songwriters around, building beautiful compositions around her favourite elements of musical history. Joined by one of the UK’s most innovative string ensembles, the ELYSIAN QUARTET.

‘SIX INCH RECORDS’ is a project that may take a little explaining.
The story begins around the time of Christmas 2006, when I drunkenly decided to become a record label boss. Every man needs a hobby, or so the cliché has it, and if I was going to make a late-stage attempt at normality then that was one of the things that I should do. So, still reeling from red wine, I typed out a email to three musicians that I knew, suggesting that I release their music on my as-yet-unnamed record label. I have no record of what I wrote in that fateful email, and I had no recollection of it the following morning, when I awoke with a hangover.

I started to work out how my ‘hobby’ was going to work. It was true that the musicians I had contacted made music I liked, and I was fairly sure that other people would like it too. I liked music, but during the period that I had been designing record covers I had come to detest the compact disc. The CD, I had decided, was simply too small.
I began to muse on numbers, thinking about the twelve inch record, the speed of thirty-three and a third revolutions, and so on. Eventually I realised that releasing three six-inch records in editions of three hundred and thirty-three and charging six pounds sixty-six pence for each one was the only was to do this….

£12
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/LONEYDEAR, WWW.LONEYDEAR.COM, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/MUSICOFBLUEROSES

LONEY DEAR hits all the right buttons with his beautifully crafted songs about love and depair and everyday anxiety. A one man band with nine members, Loney, Dear is the alter ego of multi-instrumentalist and DIY expert Emil Svanngen. The beautiful acoustics of St Giles will provide the perfect environment for Emil’s unique voice and personal style of delivery.

“Despair has never sounded so sweet.”–Spin

“Svanangen’s captivating ruminations sound as if he’s trying to capture the purest essence of joy, albeit with a melancholy underbelly. It’s that bittersweet warmth that makes Loney, Dear’s hushed, pastoral folk songs seep into the heart.”–NPR

“He wraps the ups and downs of a whirlwind romance into tiny packages. You’re left hungry, fully certain that 34 minutes– let alone five– willnever be enough of this very, very good thing.”–Pitchfork

“Through soft layers of acoustic instrumentation and vocal harmonies,
Svanangen creates a sustained and lasting representation of the classic
emotions of regret, peace, and loneliness.” –PopMatters

“Svanängen’s bright falsetto holds his miniature musical tapestries
together.” –Austin Chronicle
