CONCRETE AND GLASS PRESENTS:

Artist, cartoonist, filmmaker and musician DAVID SHRIGLEY will curate a night of music with two specially chosen bands:

The direct nature of conceptual artist MARTIN CREED’s works are evidenced by their baldly descriptive titles, for example, Work No. 227, the lights going on and off, for which he won the Turner Prize, was exactly that. This literal approach extends to his music with eponymous song titles and direct, propulsive rhythm.

PLEASE solder together garagey jangle and 60s out-there rock, relentlessly bombarding with their clattering drums and eccentric vocals, a fresh alloy of sound.

LIARS announce a London show at 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Thursday 27th May 2010.

Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross return in 2010 with their boldest and most exhilarating record to date. Sisterworld – out 8th March 2010 – was written and recorded in Los Angeles by Liars and Tom Biller and is an invigorating summation of their career so far, a dense art-pop thrill from start to finish.

Featuring the forthcoming single, Scissor, Sisterworld will be available on CD, vinyl and a 2xCD version will feature remixes and reinterpretations of all 11 tracks from artists including Thom Yorke, Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio), Bradford Cox (Deerhunter / Atlas Sound), Melvins, Alan Vega (Suicide), Chris & Cosey (Throbbing Gristle) and Blonde Redhead. Full tracklisting to follow…

Says Angus Andrew, “On this project we wanted to help develop and expand the role of the remix, particularly to engage artists less acknowledged for their work in the field. They were asked to ‘re-interpret’ the song by any means necessary and the result is definitely the most exciting collaborative effort we’ve been involved in.”

Sisterworld is Liars’ own space, completely devoid of influence, somewhere
remote from the false promises and discarded dreams amassed in LA. In it Liars explore the underground support systems created to deal with loss of self to society.

Described as LA’s best new band, FOL CHEN bring their beguiling, witty synth-pop with guitar, funky keyboards and West Coastian harmonies to Shepherds Bush Empire. Their music employs all our favourite electro-fey devices; cheesy ’80s keys, propulsive beats, sporadic strummy guitars that bounce between channels and, of course, xylophone. Beginning with understated, low-register vocals, the keeps building, layering on more instruments and even tossing in a key-change for good measure.

“L.A.’s best new band? Probably” LA weekly

“Elusive Fol Chen offers dark, whimsical debut” – NPR

FACTORY FLOOR have a rapidly growing reputation for pummeling sequencer based electronic body music, which has found them described as one of the most interesting bands the UK has to offer at the moment.

MAJOR LAZER returns for a show at Village Underground after their success at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen last year. A genre-destroying mix of innovations based on a refusal to settle for any one trademark sound, MAJOR LAZER are a bit like a Basement Jaxx album remixed by hyperactive hooligan children. Live sees them mix the rich dancehall tradition of Jamaica, tweaked soul, Afropop, disco, electro, hip-hop, and 80’s-inspired digital pop to create a dance-floor-killing set.

Plus MALUCA
While her strong fashion sense and genre-hopping ways may draw comparisons to M.I.A. and Santigold, this fiery dominicana uniquely encapsulates the duality of growing up Latina in the United States. Raised on a steady diet of mambo, bachata, and other Latin sounds, not to mention a healthy dose of ’90s hip-hop, freestyle, and downtown club music, Maluca and her music ignore traditional boundaries and drag Latin music out of the so-called “world music” doldrums.

London’s BABESHADOW is this sort of beast, a band that leaves just the tunes and nothing more. While the music may not fit the hustle and bustle of the city, they are not necessarily out of place either, especially with the advent of such new folk stars like Johnny Flynn, Mumford and Sons, and Noah & the Whale. While this may be a lazy comparison to make, it’s a fine place to start, although the band will likely show us that they don’t quite fit in anywhere.

£13.50
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/JAMIELIDELL

We are pleased to announce a new London show with JAMIE LIDELL in support of his new release ‘Compass’, his third full length, out on Warp on May 17.  The album was recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, and though Lidell worked Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco on it, musically and lyrically this is very much A Jamie Lidell Production, reflecting not only his exhilarating, diverse tastes, and a year of change, love, longing and arrival at a new place.

Undoubtedly, Compass is his most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It’s got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it’s sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It’s the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator.

“I wrote every song in a month,” Jamie says, “It’s been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into what I wanted to say and started writing. There was a lot to draw on.” When he takes to the road in 2010, he’ll be bringing a band again, but stripping it back; keeping it lean. For both newcomers and initiates, this will be an experience. And no, he won’t stop.

Swedish duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums (The Leaf Label) conjure up future/primitive soul music in which ecstatic blues-y vocals and loose-limbed percussion combine intuitively. Their songs range from bewitching ballads to freeform rituals and they come with a reputation for scene-stealing live shows. Last year they assembled an impromptu drum circle to perform from The Coronet floor. This time they come to London with a 12-strong Scandinavian choir to perform this special programme of brand new tracks. With the assistance of arranger Hildur Gudnadottir and musicians from the Bedroom Community label, Wildbirds’ sound has now morphed into something altogether more ethereal, with Mariam’s gorgeous vocals backed by spectral choral harmonies, steel pan drums and deft, articulate percussion.

THE BIG PINK follow up their successes of 2009 with a headline show at London’s Forum. Lifelong friends Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell make music that points to both the digital hardcore and art-rock undergrounds, while Robbie’s trademark soaring vocal melodies and densely encompassing reverberation complete their entrancing formula.

The at times stately drone and overdriven trebly crescendo nods to such sonic reference points as the shoe-gaze of My Bloody Valentine and brooding minimalism of Earth, but the chiming chorus and tender melodic nuance is entirely characteristic of The Big Pink’s unique furrow, full of hope-filled darkness and fragile beauty.

“A modern masterpiece” ***** The Telegraph
“These guys have got soul and they’re not afraid to bare it.” 8/10 NME
“Stunning.” **** The Fly
“Big blessed out beats, opaque guitar noise and achingly sweet melody.” The Times
“Imagine The Teardrop Explodes being played by My Bloody Valentne whilst Suicide man the mixing desk; a concotion of sounds that manages to be both affecting and tooth-tremblingly huge at the same time.” Clash
“Sky-filling exhilaration.” **** Q
“An instant noise-pop classic” BBC
“Brooding rock just turned a new shade of brilliant.” Daily Star
“There’s nothing to dislike about the London duo’s slightly seedy drum machine shoegaze.” Dazed and Confused

From Brighton, ESBEN AND THE WITCH are a band still in their infancy but that’s not stopping the world outside their bathroom taking a keen interest in the “nightmare pop” they’re brewing

Mask wearing London three-piece IS TROPICAL are the latest skuzzy, bedroom electro noise-makers to set tongues wagging. With a sound that’s somewhere between Metronomy and The Big Pink, these kids mix escapist elements with a low-fi sensibility that’s about as D.I.Y as you can get without actually going to B&Q.

Hobby Horse
Wednesday 12 May 2010

After rapidly selling out the Old Blue Last, BORN RUFFIANS follow up with another knees up at Dalston’s Hobby Horse venue. The band are famous for their sweet blend of holler, harmonies and inventive arrangements.

This trio hails from a city most widely-known for its blue-collar work ethic – a quality that Young Rival have always proudly embraced. With a sound that is both raw and hazy, dark and melodic, this band delivers an undeniably unique brand of grit-infused, wildcat rock and roll. Their latest offering comes to us in the form of an amazing collection of songs, recorded in June 2009 by Polaris Prize winning record maker Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club, Arkells).
