Adem

LAURA MARLING + MECHANICAL BRIDE
Union Chapel
Sunday 25 May 2008

£11.50
WWW.ADEM.TV

ADEM delivers a marvellously accessible mosaic of sound as he mixes clicks, hums, harps, parps, belles’n’whistles with intimate and heartfelt songs that recall Nick Drake or Spirit of Eden –era Talk Talk.

Tonight’s show will see Adem perform material from his new album of covers, within the beautiful acoustics of the Union Chapel.

An alt.folk star in the ascendant whose striking melodies and wise-beyond-her-years vocals could melt even the iciest of hearts, LAURA MARLING muddles the strength of Regina Spektor with the intelligence of Carole King and the acoustic lushness of Joni Mitchell. She began playing the guitar at the age of three, first being taught the blues by her father in front of the family fire, and has been in thrall to the songs and lyrics of the likes of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, James Taylor and John Mayall ever since.

£11.50 WWW.TICKETWEB.CO.UK 0844 477 2000 AND WWW.SEETICKETS.COM 0870 264 3333

CARIBOU, otherwise known as the composer of euphoric, dazzlingly beautiful electronic music, Dan Snaith, and band play their biggest headline show to date as they deliver their own mix of glowing pop psychedelia…  Realising how trivial and derivative most mainstream pop songs are, Snaith became obsessed with writing a melody that was both distinctive, ecstatic yet cannily familiar. It sets the tone on his rousing recent album ‘Andorra’.

Their live set sees them deliver carnival-esque whirl of ridiculous melodies, effusive noise, stampeding beats alongside furiously harmonised vocals. Two drummers, visuals and whirling guitars and keyboards create a claustrophobic, mesmeric soundscape akin to My Bloody Valentine and the sprawling, bucolic tour de force, like early Mercury Rev on magic mushrooms…
“A Truly cherished item from the moment you put it on…a perfect slice of bedroom psychedilia from someone for whom, melody and emotion are ten times as important as collectible obscurity” NME 8/10

Praise for Andorra:

“Snaith has managed to create a record alive with ecstasy and fragility. A bittersweet delight” The Observer
“Superb” 4.5/5 DJ Magazine
“In filmic terms, it’s the full 70mm” 4/5 The Independent
“These are luscious, sparkling songs that give up more with every listen” 4/5 Mixmag
“Just call it Andorra-ble” 4/5 The Mirror
“Breathtaking, spine-tingling majesty” 4/5 Mojo
“The sound of the summer” 8/10 NME
“Andorra conjures up a magical realm” 4/5 Observer Music Monthly
“A multi-layered, exuberant rush of an album. Hear it and marvel” 4.5/5 The Sun
“4/5” The Times
“Full of lush instrumentation and nostalgic yearnings. Andorra is indeed the promised land” Word Magazine

Recently signed to Warp records BORN RUFFIANS, Ontario Hills based three piece deliver their unique energetic live set of songs that will make you want to bang your head to, shake your fist to and dance along to… with its disco interlocking guitars and gorgeous vocal harmonies, Prince like funk and pounding huge beats…

Swedish duo WILDBIRDS & PEACEDRUMS consisting of singer and percussionist whose twist on the basic White Stripes-style set-up comes down like a freak-folkish poetry recital in a cider mill. While she could easily pass for a Devendra Banhart in drag, Marian’s amazing voice displays the world wary soul of Cat Power, Joni Mitchell’s jazz range and a pinch of Brigitte Bardot 60s Euro-sophistication.

BILL CALLAHAN (Smog)

ALASDAIR ROBERTS
MECHANICAL BRIDE
St James Church
Wednesday 14 May 2008
Sold Out

£15
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/TOOMUCHTOLOVE, WWW.DRAGCITY.COM/BANDS/SMOG.HTML

BILL CALLAHAN (Smog) radiates a peculiarly male energy: an unspecified kind of careworn rage, an acute sense of restlessness. As an autobiographer, Callahan is a rogue trader with an unreliable commodity, a conscientious objector to the confessors club that constitutes singer-songwriting. Boasting the propulsive, glittering and classically pretty arrangements of Neil Michael Hagerty, BILL CALLAHAN (Smog) manages to bypass the trends of the modern day while shunning retro entrapments. With a mix of gospel backing vocals by Deani Pugh-Flemmings of the Olivet Baptist Church, the incendiary guitar work of Pete Denton, and the honeyed violins of Elizabeth Warren.

Koko, 1a Camden High Street, Camden, London NW1 / 0870 432 5527
Jamie Lidell’s second album, Multiply caught people off-guard in 2005. Few expected the restless sonic scientist to make an uplifting soul record, but he did; and audiences and critics were captivated by the fusion of his influences with deeply felt song writing, meticulous production skills, and most of all, that flipping amazing voice. According to the reviews, Jamie was at various times, Little Richard, Jimi, Otis, Sly, Prince, Marvin, Stevie or some mashed-up combo of them all. Meanwhile, his live show has become an infamously exhilarating experience, with Jamie performing on the edges of control and chaos, turning music inside out.

The show at Koko follows the release of new album ‘Jim’ on the 28th of April. Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It’s a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of ‘hillbilly funk’. “I haven’t tried to hide the influences,” he says “This is the music I love.” But, listen closely and you can hear Jamie moving in new directions, creating a sound and style that is entirely his own.

The JUNIOR BOYS defy any easy equation of pop or dance, joining a long tradition of sonically rich pop that unites emotionally charged songcraft with experimental genres eg – New Order, Beach Boys.

METRONOMY slot perfectly into a new, experimental landscape, though they mine their own seam. Sitting somewhere between Kraftwerk, Devo, N.E.R.D and your favourite indie band, as well as experimentation there’s also a joyous humour in what they do.

Based on Eel Pie Island, the Bohemian stronghold in the middle of the Thames at Twickenham, the MYSTERY JETS embody British pop at its most invigoratingly weird. Already, previous singles Zoo Time, You Cant Fool Me Dennis, On My Feet and Alas Agnes have seemed like dispatches from some starry-eyed parallel universe. A universe where Syd Barrett never dropped out but played on with Einzurstende Neubauten, where the irresistible pop of Dexys can happily co-exist with the Krautrock explorations of Can, and where the most forbidding musical forms of the past, like prog rock, are gleefully reinvented in the smash-and-grab spirit of the present.

BLONDE REDHEAD

DEVASTATIONS + HOLY FUCK
O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
Monday 21 April 2008

£14
WWW.BLONDE-REDHEAD.COM/, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/BLONDEREDHEAD, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/DEVASTATIONS, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/HOLYFUCK

Taking their name from a song by New York No Wave artists DNA, BLONDE REDHEAD began playing and rehearsing in New York in the early 1990s, drawing inspiration from the city’s squalling underground scene, from movie soundtracks, everywhere they could.

From their first combustive, dissonant record produced by Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) to the hypnotic, rapturous songwriting of self-produced 23 the band have created an impressive 7 albums. Their live sets see them combining spare otherworldliness and bittersweet tension as they deliver blurred strings, magical chimes, dark guitar washes, multidimensional rhythms and rich bass lines, think somewhere between Serge Gainsbourg and The Cocteau Twins meets My Bloody Valentine.

DEVASTATIONS have been praised for their gothic detailing and subtle use of instrumental colouration (harmonium, optigan, rhythm box, keyboards, strings, et. al). The band earned a reputation as well-refined miserablists and classic-minded balladeers, specialists in the sub-genre known as orch-pop.

HOLY FUCK are a modern electronic dance act who eschew modern technology. Their lo-tech battery operated keyboards and toys, manipulated and distorted, create live frenetic energy, with pop and techno classics harnessing the element of surprise and earning critical acclaim.

LISA LINDLAY-JONES AND GUESTS
The Luminaire
Saturday 29 March 2008

£6.50 ADVANCE
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/FINDLAYBROWN, WWW.FINDLAYBROWN.COM/

FINDLAY BROWN will be following up his jam-packed residency at the Gladstone arms with a special show at the Luminaire.

Emotionally-driven, psychedelic, spiked with wit, blessed with a cidery traditionalism and foiled with subtle, yet noticeably modern, production from Simian’s Simon Lord, Findlay’s work is truly ‘alternative folk’, but he says he’s “more influenced by sixties music in turn influenced by folk”. Understated, nylon-stringed acoustica with a timeless and haunting edge.

LISA LINDLEY-JONES Lisa saw something bigger than any of the cooler than cool scenes she dipped into tripping between Brighton and London and also her native Stockholm. This talented musician and lyricist’s music has a fragility and power conveyed through both her vocal style and the songs’ framework, managing to be complex without pretence.

KID HARPOON

HELSINKI + GUESTS
Dingwalls
Thursday 13 March 2008

£7.50 ADVANCE
MYSPACE.COM/KIDHARPOON

Kid Harpoon’s songwriting is something to marvel at, laced with powerful, dream-like imagery: “rivers, roses, devils, that sort of thing” as his debut single ‘Riverside’ nods at. As far as English singer-songwriters go, the Kid’s take is a million miles removed from the kind of mush doled out by famous ones with James as a first name. Playing his Martin guitar like an extra limb, darting around the stage with an elfin charm and real urgency, his music is utterly compelling in a live environment.

“it’s glaringly obvious that we have a humongous new talent in our midst. He sings with a brutish clarity that seems to flit between gutsy growl and graceful falsetto with precision, ease and fluidity. He plays guitar with a determined, dynamic dexterity that is a sheer joy to watch.” DiS
