Egyptian Hip Hop sign to R&S Records

Debut album ‘GOOD DONT SLEEP’ released October 22

Stream: ‘SYH’ HERE

Egyptian Hip Hop first emerged back in 2009 as four sparky 17-year-olds from Manchester with an uncanny knack for lush, scruffy melodies and raucous tales of guitar lessons from Johnny Marr. Their debut EP ‘Some Reptiles Grew Wings’, produced by Warp’s Hudson Mohawke, featured a clutch of delectably angular pop songs and affirmed their singular sense of rhythm.

Following an extended hiatus, during which lead singer Alexander Hewett spent time as a touring musician for Connan Mockasin and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Egyptian Hip Hop return triumphant with their debut album on R&S Records. ‘GOOD DONT SLEEP’ is a promise kept and worth every shred of wondering. The self-conscious naivety of their early recordings has dissipated, making way for a mature musicality that is invigoratingly sensual. Dancing with summer pollen and possibility, Yoro Diallo and SYH hum with the polyrhythmic intensity of ‘Remain In Light’-era Talking Heads. Spiraling sideways like a honey-drunk bumblebee, Pearl Sound and One Eyed King take a detour into the eeriness of Silver Apples. On another plane, The White Falls traces a dream from its delicate distant stirring to full crystalline crescendo. The album’s crowning glory, however, is closer lltoise, a gossamer-spun composition that scales Tangerine Dream heights and evokes the sheer joy of waiting to fall.

Make no mistake: while ‘GOOD DONT SLEEP’ has a deep affinity with psychedelia, it steers a thrillingly new path toward pop. This long-awaited debut demonstrates Egyptian Hip Hop’s astute awareness of what has come before yet is wholly of the non-linear now. The band recorded the album with producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Darkstar) in Leeds and at legendary Welsh studio Bryn Derwen, where they recall the sound of the wind blowing the trees winding its way into the record.

Whichever angle it’s viewed from, whether a 20,000-strong singalong throng in Melbourne, through the smoggy haze of West Hollywood or from the window of Dougy Mandagi’s flat overlooking the riot zone in Hackney, The Temper Trap’s 2009 debut ‘Conditions’ was a roaraway success. Propelled by the omniscience of a song called ‘Sweet Disposition’, the album sold nearly a million copies worldwide. The Melbourne four-piece made a breakthrough at odds with the flash-in-the-pan nature of rock’s revolving door, resulting in a Brit nomination for International Breakthrough Artist and two sell-out UK tours including a trio of shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. ‘Sweet Disposition’ may have been their not-so-secret weapon, but they backed it up with an album of nuanced epic-pop perfection and a work ethic that would mean they wouldn’t see their own beds for the best part of three years.

Crybaby

SPECIAL GUESTS
The Lexington
Wednesday 19 September 2012

£12.50 ADVANCE

When The Lights Go Out is the new single from Crybaby. Taken from Crybaby’s critically acclaimed eponymous debut album, When The Lights Go Out is a beautiful, strangely uplifting song about saying goodbye to someone close and finding solace in your memories when they’ve gone.

Crybaby is the alias of Bristol’s Danny Coughlan. Named after Garnet Mimms’ Cry Baby – one of the truly seminal songs in the development of soul music, it was famously covered by Janis Joplin – ‘Crybaby’ is a collection of blissfully spare, fully focussed pieces propelled by dramatic imagery and gripping melody. Crybaby was recorded at Ashley Manor in Wiltshire and produced by Merrick (Chris Hughes) from Adam & The Ants – who also plays drums on several songs – and Mark Frith.

PRAISE FOR ‘CRYBABY’…

“Unafraid to be both beautiful and sad, songs such as Shame and Misery Of Love are like Roy Orbison tackling Scott Walker” **** Q MAGAZINE

“Recalling Richard Hawley and Roy Orbison (‘Crybaby’ is) heart-slicing sadness at it’s most classically reverential” THE FLY

“A truly wonderful album” SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE MAGAZINE

“Danny Coughlan as Crybaby is an astonishingly fully formed version of the artist he obviously set out to be……these are bona fide neo-classics, classy and classically structured” GUARDIAN NEW BAND OF THE DAY

(‘I Cherish The Heartbreak More Than The Love That I Lost’ is) “… a wonderful blend of Roy Orbison, The Smiths, Phil Spector and the Jesus & Mary Chain. An utterly charming debut”  GUARDIAN F&M PLAYLIST

“A Bristolian tunesmith with as much heart as Richard Hawley” NME

BEIRUT

BEIRUTBAND.COM/

After a phenomenal sell out show at Brixton Academy, we are proud to present the amazing BEIRUT at Hammersmith Apollo.

In a typical teenager’s New Mexico bedroom, Zach Condon recorded Gulag Orkestar shortly after quitting college, with some help from local musicians Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw). For him, it was nothing new, having recorded hundreds of songs since he was fifteen the same way. This time, however, a flood of attention followed, as online raves lead to reverential fandom, international acclaim, and a tsunami of interviews, photoshoots and features, as Condon and his newly formed band traveled to Russia, Poland, Turkey and throughout North America and Europe.

Astonishingly, he proved himself as talented a bandleader as composer. New songs were written, album songs reworked, and the band’s shows quickly developed to dramatic heights far beyond its mere months-long existence. This band went on to record an EP, Lon Gisland, in 2007, which marked the first Beirut recordings with the live ensemble. Half a year later, Beirut came out with another album, The Flying Club Cup. Inspired by an obscure photo from 1910 depicting hot air balloons taking flight mere steps away from the Eiffel Tower, an image Zach stuck to the wall for inspiration, The Flying Club Cup is an homage to France’s culture, fashion, history and music.

In 2009, Beirut released the double EP March of the Zapotec & Realpeople: Holland. The first was partly recorded in Oaxaca with the Mexican Banda Jimenez, and a more pronounced South-American flavor. The second EP ‘Holland’ was credited to Condon’s old name Realpeople and consists of five electrotracks.

Summer 2011 saw the release of The Rip Tide on Condon’s own Pompeii Label, Beirut’s first proper LP since The Flying Club Cup. Written in isolation during a snowy upstate winter, the album marked a stark change in emotional direction, that is to say, inward. Reflecting less on the travels and travails borne of the wanderlust struck musician, instead, The Rip Tide has crystallized the sounds of Beirut’s past into a cohesive and remarkable whole, all while maintaining the unmistakable aesthetic that has brought them around the world, and home again.

Plus support from brilliant recent 4AD signing DAUGHTER

The London-based trio of Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella, collectively known as Daughter, has signed to 4AD worldwide, outside of North America.

On the strength of just two EPs, His Young Heart and The Wild Youth, Daughter have built for themselves a dedicated following, illustrated by their sold-out show at the 700-capacity Assembly Hall in North London. No mean feat for a band whose current incarnation has been performing together for a mere eighteen months.

Commenting on their new career path, Daughter say, “We couldn’t be happier to be working with 4AD, a label that has released so many inspirational records and whose ethos we hold in very high regard. It really is a privilege.”

Daughter are working on their debut album. In the mean time, the trio will be playing the following shows. You can also watch an acoustic performance of ‘Medicine’ below, a track taken from The Wild Youth EP.

The phrase “jack of all, master of all” isn’t exactly one that gets bandied about, but is one that may well apply to the most recently inked player in the Modular clubhouse, JONATHAN BOULET. The precociously inspired Sydney muscian makes a brand of ceremoniously uplifting, deeply colourful and down-right heavy pop, that sounds like something for which you’ve been searching but never thought you’d find.

After releasing is solo debut last year which included the ever-anthemic festival favourite – A Community Service Announcement, JB has been touring his little heart out across Australia playing festivals such as … and supporting the likes of …. Not content with writing, recording and producing all his own jams, Boulet has also produced several bands including Megastick Fanfare & Kyu. All the while, also wielding the sticks in his other band – Parades. Talented guy.

To say Jonathan Boulet is a busy chap is an understatement. In between all these goings on, he has also polished off the finishing touches to his new album – We Keep The Beat Found The Sound See The Need Start The Heart. A snapshot in to the world of Boulet, the album touches on dark production, honest song-writing and lush productions, with the signature JB chaotic fun ever present and leaves nothing to be desired. The new album is due to drop early 2012.
