Gil Scott Heron

Gil Scott Heron is without doubt one of the most important voices in 20th century music, being called a vietnam-era langston hughes, a proto-rap pioneer, and the black bob dylan, someone whose unfailingly sharp and ironic eye spared neither black-power phonies or scheming presidents. New album ‘I’m New Here’ places scott-heron’s keenly observed, biting spoken word narratives alongside sparse, modern musical backdrops which reference touchstones as diverse and relevant as dubstep, electronica and of course, modern hip-hop. politically as relevant as ever, as well as humourous, melancholy, and hopeful, this is the work of a vibrant, subtle poet of protest, still able to manipulate the traditions of a stylistic oeuvre he helped create into something warm, original and full of gravitas.

The XX

MOUNT KIMBIE
Somerset House

Sold Out

HTTP//WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THEXX

Bonding over a shared love of dark, emotive 80s guitar sounds and the high-end sheen of American R&B, THE XX‘s unique sound befits a band whose wide range of influences include everything from Aaliyaah to Cocorosie, Rhianna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to The Chromatics and Mariah Carey to The Pixies.

These influences combine via beautiful, hushed vocal duets and a brilliantly inventive use of samples and low-end frequencies to produce a stark, sweet melancholic pop.

MOUNT KIMBIE are a duo from Peckham who have developed a truly unique sound of experimental rhythms that lend themselves to the fringes of dubstep and hip hop, but ooze with emotion and echoing ambient soundscapes that take the listener to an entirely different place. Their music is dreamy and melancholic, with a more playful feel than most dubstep has.

Noah and the Whale are currently in the recording studio preparing their third album, which will be the follow up to 2008s ‘The First Days of Spring’. They have been compared to Bonnie Prince Billy, Belle and Sebastian, and Neutral Milk Hotel, and the band cite both punk rock and folk as influences. They play impressionistic symphonic-pop, cleverly crafted by a band with many strings to their bow.

Mystery Jets kick off the Somerset House Summer Series with this special gig.

Set to release their new album ‘Serotonin’ on 5th July, Mystery Jets are back with a more mature sound, but without losing the jubilant sing-a-long style that they are loved for. Although Henry Harrison has stopped touring with the band, he’s been back on board for the writing process, and the results show a more varied sound, going from Fleetwood Mac all the way to The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The Royal Northern College Of Music in association with Eat Your Own Ears will present a night of avant garde experimentalism, overseen by the world famous conductor André de Ridder, who scored and conducted Damon Albarn’s Monkey: Journey to the West opera. Performing pieces written nearly a hundred years apart by the hugely influential Stravinsky as well as Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Ólafur Arnalds, the night is a great introduction to the overlap between classical and popular music.

PETE UM

£10.50
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/STEVEMASONLOVESYOU, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/PETEUM

Former Beta Band front man STEVE MASON is one of the brit-pop generation’s few genuinely brilliant and original songsmiths. Having previously released music under the aliases King Biscuit Time and Black Affair, Steve Mason released his first album under his own name, Boys Outside, in March this year. In this new, stripped back setting of muted guitars and piano melodies, Steve Mason’s troubled lyrics are devastatingly direct. Much of The Beta Band sound is still present – the off-kilter melodies and electro influence – but this time the songs also offer an elegant blend of trilling piano, strummed guitar and crisp digital beats.

“The lovelier the music – in the swooshing, soaring chorus of The Letter, or the shimmering All Come Down – the more achingly fragile Mason sounds.” – The Guardian

“His beautifully dignified performance provides just the right amount of therapeutic release without tipping…into over-sentimentalism” – Pitchfork

“Mason’s talent for conjuring up dream-like melodies and hypnotic rhythms is apparent on the tranquillising yet twinkling ‘All Come Down'” – Drowned In Sound

Plus support from PETE UM one man tape-poet from Cambridge, UK, with sardonic humour, unreliable MD player and a bunch of weird electronic miniatures. When not depressed, he can be a great entertainer. Meanwhile, his music had been boosted by eccentrics such as Ariel Pink. Attempts to define his personality provoke his peers to phrases like…

…Um is an electro-dadaist pop star peddling audio anxiety and monomania from the digital kitchen sink
…Um is the glint in Delia Derbyshire’s eye as she puts Kurt Schwitters and Julian Cope to the razor blade
…Absolute belter of oddball proportions

CHILLY GONZALES
O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
Tuesday 22 June 2010

£20 IN ADVANCE
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/CHARLOTTEGAINSBOURG, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/GONZPIRATION

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s musical pedigree is no secret. The daughter of French avant-pop provocateurs Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, her predilection for sophisticated francophonic pop music is a birthright. Singing both in French and English, Gainsbourg has collaborated with many musicians including Beck and Jarvis Cocker, to produce mature songs, often preoccupied with the gravest and most melancholy of subjects…

We are very lucky to be presenting her first ever UK show.

We’re also lucky to have the amazing Chilly Gonzales who first appeared on the scene 10 years ago as the self-titled Worst MC and progenitor of Jew-funk. He has since turned his hand to producing, working with the likes of Feist, Jamie Lidell and Buck 65, and has recently had huge success with his Solo Piano album, which resulted in his Piano Talk Show residencies in London, New York and Paris. These evenings of musical virtuosity and audience involvement played host to Jarvis Cocker, Late Of The Pier and thecocknbullkid.

MOUNT KIMBIE + PATTEN
Heaven
Wednesday 16 June 2010

SOLD OUT
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/CARIBOUMANITOBA, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/MOUNTKIMBIE, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/PATTENSONGS

After rapidly selling out his returning London show at Corsica Studios CARIBOU has scheduled another show of euphoric full band music, this time at Heaven. The new dates come on the back of the release of the amazing album Swim out on April 20th.

Dan Snaith AKA Caribou described the album’s sound thusly: “I got excited by the idea of making dance music that’s liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan… Dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does.

The new single release ‘Odessa’ has been receiving 8/10 reviews, and a “best new music” review from Pitchfork.

This year we will see a dramatic difference in the Caribou live performance. Now that technology has finally caught up to Dan’s ambitions for the band’s show, while it will still be four musicians on stage, the dynamic interplay between visuals, electronics and the live sound will be taken to the next level.

If you think you know Caribou, think again. Dan Snaith’s new album is the sound of the musical glass ceiling being blown away.

Swim is full of brightly textured, rapturous gems that gleam with astonishing production – and then wrenches at your heart with soulful, thoughtful reveries on the passing of time, family history and the breakdown of relationships. “There are songs about growing old in a relationship, about divorce and loneliness in old age but the lyrics are generally pretty abstract sketches of what’s going on in the situation in my head.”

We can’t think of another multi-instrumentalist/ producer/ songwriter/ singer/ arranger/ composer who has the ability to harness all these talents into something as breathtakingly gorgeous yet dance floor ready as Dan Snaith AKA Caribou.

Peckham duo MOUNT KIMBIE have developed a truly unique sound, experimental rhythms that lend themselves to the fringes of dubstep and hip hop, but ooze with emotion and echoing ambient soundscapes that take the listener to an entirely different place. Their music is dreamy and melancholic, with a more playful feel than most dubstep.

Mystery-shrouded PATTEN’s new live show is a tripped-out head-body thing, saturating the air with heavy, unspooling reels of prismatic sound. Echoey skewed dancefloor.

“The band ooze musicianship and chemistry. This could well turn out to be one of those ‘I was there’ moments, which is, in the end, what this sort of gig is supposed to be all about.” CLASH MAGAZINE LIVE REVIEW

Following on from their March UK tour which includes a sold out Heaven show. Los Angeles’ finest Local Natives will once again grace the UK shores to headline and fill London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire with soaring vocals and dulcet sounds. The five-piece blend hazy southern californian melodies, tightly assembled harmonies alongside a natural percussive frame. Their incessant touring and hours spent living and writing together has provided a unifying connection. Their debut album aptly named after their communal home; ‘Gorilla Manor’ is a torrent of evolving, encompassing and emotional sound. It has the warmth and instant attraction on hearing mid period Talking Heads or Band of Horses for the first time.

Plus LISSIE

“One of the year’s true finds, Lissie maintains the flame for the true rebel country spirit with her finely-etched songs and smokey vocals” – The Mirror

“Lissie draws comparisons to Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde, but is also able to transcend the past to become a present day icon for lovers of both blues, folk, and country.” – Q Magazine

“Lissie has the voice, the songs and the image to be huge in 2010… A talent way too big for just one canyon.” – Sunday Times

“Band Of Horses endorsed freckle-nosed country-pop from the mid-west via California. Fuelled by tequila, tomato juice and a broken heart.” – BBC Newsbeat

Plus BLUE ROSES

Pitched somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Joanna Newsom, Blue Roses aka Laura Groves writes beautifully delicate folk songs, played almost entirely by Laura herself on everything from analogue synths and gently finger picked guitars to accordions and glockenspiels.

“A haunting record, full of unexpected instrumental textures that course beneath Groves’s extraordinary voice and eerie, elusive lyrics” 4**** SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE

“The female singer/songwriter shelf may be crowded but you won’t regret clearing a spot for Blue Roses” METRO

“like all the craziest bits of techno, hip-hop, folk and jazz having a sex-orgy…Proper, prescription-strength ear-drugs.” 4* Front

After selling out his first London show of the new decade, Four Tet will be performing under the vaulted arches of East London’s Village Underground venue.

2010 is set to be a big year for Four Tet, with single Love Cry sitting firmly in the year-end best-of lists, and 5th album There Is Love In You winning star reviews across the board.

Having kept busy with remixes of everyone from Radiohead to Madvillain, Four Tet, AKA Kieran Hebden shows no sign of rust on the aforementioned single a lush, sprawling house jam that builds upon a jazzy drum loop over the course of its nine minute run time. The remainder of There Is Love In You’s nine tracks go a long way in demonstrating why Four Tet is one of the most dynamic acts now.
