Apologies to those who were looking forward to coming to see the band this weekend.

ERLAND AND THE CARNIVAL were formed by singer/guitarist and Orkney islander Erland Cooper with ex-The Verve/The Good, The Bad & The Queen guitarist Simon Tong and drummer David Nock. Together, they produce a sound described by Tong as “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek.” In other words: folk-tinged, psyched up, fuzzed-out brilliance.

Some history: Erland grew up on the Orkney Islands, where passing musicians and troubadors were a common sight. In his early teens, The Verve and Bert Jansch inspired him to swap the fiddle for the guitar. Later, having moved to London, Erland sang at Tong’s What The Folk club night in Portobello Road, where he was introduced to the former Verve man by the producer Youth. “It wasn’t a regular folk night where people are quiet and stroke their chin,” says Tong. “It was a more raucous affair where the acts – as many as 15 a night – had to quieten a noisy baying audience by being good. Erland definitely got people to shut up and listen.”

Resolving to form a band, Nock, Tong and Cooper took their name from Jackson C Frank’s My Name Is Carnival, a cover of which appears on the album. The band’s progression since has been fairly unorthodox: they’ve played gigs at miniature railway stations and their debut EP was individually re-recorded for each of its limited run, meaning no two copies are the same. All the while, they’ve been developing that bewitching sound.

Going from strength to strength, Erland and the Carnival enjoyed packed out shows at The Old Blue Last and Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, and have just posted 2 new cover versions – Tunng and Envy – on their website http://erlandandthecarnival.com.

ALESSI’S ARK is the musical project of Alessi Laurent-Marke (born june 30, 1990), a singer-songwriter from Hammersmith in West London. Her new album ‘soul proprietor’ represents the 1st fruits of her new deal with bella union and shows that this precocious singer songwriter and contemporary of Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn and Noah and the Whale’s Charlie Fink continues to mature at an astonishing rate. Her haunting breathy vocals weave intricately between rich layers of orchestral strings and generous use of harps and violins, and seem to have found its distinct character; warm and bewitching it inevitably conjures associations with the likes of Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom, Laura Marling and Cat Power. However Alessi stands out from the well-worn canvas of the folk-pop storytelling, inviting us into the enthralling and mystical realm where the mundane is turned into exquisitely crafted poetry.

DUKE GARWOOD
is a nomadic wanderer, who has contributed brass to Archie Bronson Outfit’s live set, and played in the Woodsmen. Garwood is completely content to exist and create on his own terms, and as Garwood picks his blues and murmurs his songs, time vanishes as he transports you to a world sound tracked by sparse plucking, gentle percussion and his deep, thoughtful vocal. Though steeped in the blues and deeply influenced by his hero Thelonious Monk, Garwood never becomes distracted into reverential homage. There’s a fractured, lo-fi feel to what he does, an unconcern with rigid adherence to tradition that makes his music all the more exciting.

Though Nottingham isn’t an obvious place for a 60s baroque pop revival, such is THE SOUNDCARRIERS‘ attention to detail – split stereo, Joe Meek reverb – you’d be forgiven for entirely revising that opinion. Here, the presence of a harmonium updates some lava lamp pyschedelic freakouts, David Axelrod’s jazzy grooves and the feathery female harmonies of The Free Design, whose Chris Dedrick provides sleevenotes for the vinyl. Uncertainty consequently recalls Broadcast, albiet less aloof, while Let It Ride sounds like Portishead if they’d jammed harder on Third – Eden Parke – Uncut Magazine – June 2009

Peckham-based duo MOUNT KIMBIE have already caused a stir with their atmospheric releases, a percussive and experimental take on dubstep. Dominic Maker and Kai Campos first two eps caused a commotion when released last year, undergoing reworks from the likes of Faulty dl, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio.

From dubstep to post rock, traces of influence are visible, but the band’s sound is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, they float through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.

ÓLÖF ARNALDS

LES SHELLEYS
Bush Hall
Tuesday 14 September 2010

£9.50
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/OLOFARNALDS , WWW.LOCALISM.ORG.UK/ , WWW.MYSPACE.COM/LESSHELLEYS

In spite of her young age ÓLÖF ARNALDS has been active on the Icelandic experimental scene for many years. She played with electronica virtuosos Múm between 2003 and 2007, and her debut album ‘Vid og Vid’ was produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Icelandic greats, Sigur Rós. Arnalds tells personal tales with a tender voice and leaves the impression of a classic troubadour with clear associations to early freak-folkers like Vashti Bunyan and Judee Sill or todays Joanna Newsom.

Her talent not only reveals itself in the variety of the instruments she masters, but also in her beautiful labyrinthine songwriting and mesmerizing solo performances. Ólöf’s voice has been singled out for high praise as “otherworldly” by The New York Times, “stunning” by SPIN, “remarkable” by the NME, “ethereal” by Vanity Fair and “impossibly lovely” by Paste.

“…Reykjavik’s answer to Kate Bush…her debut is a spare, troubadour-like affair garnished with haunting, witch-child vocals.” MOJO (4/5)

“…her voice is high and clear, with a gentle quaver that humanizes its otherworldly purity.” The New York Times

“..Olof Arnalds has the kind of voice that can silence a room, such is its sweetness. And high-profile fans such as Björk have been very vocal about Arnalds’ awesome talent.” Time Out New York

LES SHELLEYS are Tom Brosseau and Angela Correa, a duo who first began cutting their teeth in San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. Their sound has been described as a plait of voices.

The Mountain Goats

CHAD VALLEY

Thursday 9 September 2010

£16.50
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THEMOUNTAINGOATS, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/HUGOMANUEL

John Darnielle who leads cult band THE MOUNTAIN GOATS has been long recognised by their (understandably avid) fans as one of the most imaginative and downright thrilling lyricists of his generation.

The Mountain Goats began life in a Norwalk employee-housing studio apartment that had awesome deco tiling on the bathroom floor but little more to recommend the place as a living space. Still, you take what you can get, and it was ridiculously cheap. In this room, equipped with a dual-cassette recorder, John D. started setting some of his poetry to music, using a guitar he’d gotten for a few bucks at a nearby strip mall music store. His idea at the time was that eventually his day job would be “poet.” Young men have all kinds of crazy ideas about what they’re going to end up doing for a living.

In 2001, though, 4AD called up and asked if the Mountain Goats wouldn’t like to make records with them. John called Peter. They hit the studio. As a duo, the two toured at a pace that can fairly be called “relentless” from 2002 until 2007. They made records: Tallahassee, We Shall All Be Healed, The Sunset Tree, Get Lonely. They took to recruiting drummers from their opening acts to play the last few songs with them. And then they met Jon Wurster, and the three took to the road in support of Get Lonely, from Fairbanks, Alaska to Hobart, Tasmania, and a few points even further south. They enjoyed playing together so much that when it came time to repair to the studio again, all three went in. In 2008, the three recorded Heretic Pride, and in early 2009, The Life of the World to Come.

CHAD VALLEY is the solo effort of Jonquil’s Hugo Manuel. Manuel offers another fresh take on Ibiza bliss. Combining New Order’s thumping bass and introspective lyrics with a more chilled out atmosphere, Chad Valley bring a new voice to electro scene.

ROOM THREE:
ASBO…
The Glimmers, Riotous Rockers, Alvin C

“Kill Em All has always been about live acts and DJs, we always liked the energy you get from a band that then runs throughout the night and all the DJ sets. It was never really an intentional device to make the night seem alternative, it is just that we were always equally into bands as we were DJs and electronic artists. Sometimes it’s about a sonic experience; it doesn’t always have to be comfortable. It’s good to test your ears but you can pretty much dance to anything with a kick drum and Kill Em All, at the end of the day, is a party.” – Filthy Dukes

Having held down a residency here in Farringdon for a number of years now, Kill Em All have proved themselves to be a frequently daring troop. Consistently striving to bend the lines between conventional club performances and show stealing live acts, they’re returning to us after their summer hiatus and to mark it they’re bringing a bunch of their highly influential friends along for the ride. Inviting one of London’s most influential and alternative promoters, Eat Your Own Ears – whose reputation for the representation of new and interesting textures at some of the most out there gigs in the city precedes them – and Camden club night ASBO, Kill Em All and co. have put together a lineup that fully illustrates their outlook and ethos aligning top draw DJs with new, innovative and daring live acts.

“Eat Your Own Ears have been putting on amazing gigs for ages, they’re completely ahead of the curve and their Field Day festival truly is special. The Riotous Rockers are extremely good mates of ours – we have kind of ‘grown up’ as DJs together. They run a wicked night with our friend Alvin called ASBO and we’re dead chuffed to have them hosting a room. They have incredible taste in music and always surprise us with the records they pull out.” – Filthy Dukes

With a view to creating an experience that presents good club music, regardless of whether it’s being mixed or performed, the combined trio of promoters have assembled a plethora of artists who are defining their own sounds. Acts like Factory Floor, a quintessentially Kill Em All act (for want of a better phrase), who imbibe the spirit of Joy Division as much as they channel krautrock sensibilities and a brazen love of electronics sit boldly next to DJs like Four Tet, Jamie XX, Boy 8 Bit and Joe Goddard.

“We have had some odd combinations in the past, like the Maccabees live followed by Para One. It wasn’t the smoothest transition but it worked: it’s about good music, full of good ideas, not about sticking to a particular genre. I got an email from some people who had been there to see Maccabees as they were in a band themselves, but it was Para One that blew them away – they sold their guitars and bought samplers (almost like the LCD track). A few months later Busy P had one of their records in his chart. This is obviously not to belittle the Maccabees, they were amazing and a lot of dance heads loved them, but it’s about exposing people to something they weren’t expecting.”

“This month’s lineup is pretty eclectic again, but all quite dance based. Egyptian Hip Hop are a fantastic young band and have been working with some interesting producers so we’re very keen to hear them live. Factory Floor I saw at Standon Calling last week and they blew my mind, I thought they were amazing. Really exiting dance music, that sounds really old, like it came out of a German bunker in 1979, yet it’s really vital and new sounding.” – Filthy Dukes

Bear In Heaven take influence from Barrett-era Pink Floyd, mix it with shoe-gaze effects racks, reverbs and washed out colours to produce spacious three- to four- minute pop anthems with towering choruses. Their greatest trick is creating music that evokes the sort of physicality and scope that could soundtrack a Hollywood film, but also works equally well at stirring up intimate bodily passion. Even when delving into darker and more personal subject matter, Jon Philpot still manages to imbue the songs with an atmosphere of seduction and intrigue, all lush synth beds and warm electronics.

Praise from the press:

‘Woozy, Modest Mouse-like guitars wheeze over a propulsive, sputtering beat before a high-speed keyboard throb takes over and shoots it into outer space’ –Treblezine

‘They’ve Yeasayer’s playfulness, MGMT’s way with a deceptively catchy melody, and The Ruby Suns’ penchant for layering on an infectiously happy haziness that keeps the listener coming back.’ – BBC Music

Islington Boys Club are energetic, punchy and captivating. They are well known for their stage presence and action packed sets of melodramatic indie rock, creating an eclectic and individual sound. They have been doing the rounds of Shoreditch for about a year, and have gathered quite a following.

Blue on Blue are a stripped-down, garage take on shoegaze; the boy / girl guitarists could be Bobby Gillespie and Kim Deal (both circa 1988). They are a London based jangly pop three-piece, who woo the audience with their energetic, enjoyable performance.

Pitchfork are hosting a super new remix of Bear In Heaven’s Ultimate Satisfacion by The Field.

From Pitchfork:
As previously reported, Brooklyn synth-gazers Bear in Heaven are set to reissue last year’s BNM’d album Beast Rest Forth Mouth September 14 via Hometapes. The reissue will come with a bonus disc of remixes from notables such as High Places, Studio, Jesu’s Justin K. Broadrick, and minimal techno mastermind Axel Willner, aka the Field. The Field’s rework of Beast Rest Forth Mouth standout “Ultimate Satisfaction” is available above.

For this eight-minute-plus remix, Willner takes the original tune and dips it in a bath of warm, tumbling drum beats and wavering synths, cutting and pasting vocalist Jon Philpot’s yearning calls.

TEETH + THISAINTNODISCO DJ
The Lexington
Monday 9 August 2010

£7
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/SLEIGHBELLSMUSIC, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/TEETHDANCE

In conjunction with our friends WHITE HEAT, who are celebrating 7 years of fantastic shows, we are delighted to present our favourite Brooklynites, SLEIGH BELLS.

SLEIGH BELLS are just a duo – Derek on beat production, guitars, and songwriting; Alexis Krauss on vocals – but their tracks ram together many sonic worlds. Their electronic beats thud with gut-rattling low end; guitars are distorted siren squalls, or heavily gated and thoroughly crunched power chords, or playful, beta-band-esque strums. Krauss flips easily from hip-hop hook, to pop power, to sunshined, coquettish coos.

Past members of Sleigh Bells went on to form buzz-band Surfer Blood. Derek’s old hardcore band Poison The Well toured with Give Up The Ghost, the defunct hardcore outfit of past BTW Cold Cave’s Wes Eisold. Alexis Krauss is a school teacher with a pop-singer past. All of which gives certain strength to their reinvention in this excellent new outfit.

Their combustible pop is finely razed by Alexis Krauss’s outsized yet totally natural stage presence.

TEETH are a DIY trio who don’t do things the easy way. When they first set up a myspace page, it included only one song, which was a live version of Alanis Morissette’s ‘Thank You’, performed by Alanis. Now they have 2 of their own tracks and 3 remixes, all seedy synth sounds and dancey beats, held together with luscious female vocals courtesy of Veronica So. Their raucous punk-filled music would give Crystal Castles a run for their money, and with a new 7″ just released via Moshi Moshi and cassettes to collect, they are not leaving their DIY roots behind just yet.

thisaintnodisco plays a vast array of styles, from L.A Dream Pop and New York Garage to London Lo-Fi and Warpy Electronica, he prides himself on an ever changing set list. With notable recent appearances, alongside the likes of Memory Tapes, Gold Panda, How to Dress Well, Memory House and a main stage slot at this years Field Day, the future looks rosy. Vice Magazine and Eat Your Own Ears present an exclusive invite only party, featuring a live set from Sleigh Bells, a dj set from the delightful Dance Magic Dance, plus some very special guests.

DANCE MAGIC DANCE are 3 girls who run nights all over London, who mix up different musical genres with little regard for taste or decency, and generally have lots of cider fueled girly fun.

Re-imagining the iciest of grime synths through a warped K Records aesthetic, BECOMING REAL has forged a frozen sound that still retains an unequivocally human touch. Charged with ominous dread, this is music for seas drowned in oil, tar-coated forest landscapes, and a future world of underwater clubs and spooked dancefloors.

RESCHEDULED SHOW – tickets for the volcano-disrupted April show will be valid for tonight.

HOLLY MIRANDA’s David Sitek-produced solo record is a dreamy, dense collection of songs, with achy falsetto and swooping melodies. The New York Times called this Brooklynite “…a less fearful Cat Power, a more substantive Feist, a Norah Jones with actual feeling,” and her songs are layer upon layer of woozy instrumentation and harmony.

ALICE GOLD

ANNA CALVI’s unique blend of dark atmospheric romantic pop has already caught the attention of London’s elite; her intense and mesmerising live performances showcase her Telecaster guitar, vintage harmonium, and layers of choral like vocals and violins. Anna Calvi’s fiercely provocative and masterful electric guitar work continues to win over new audiences.
