With a mammoth 2010 tour this year has seen a dramatic difference in the Caribou live performance. Now that technology has finally caught up to Dan’s ambitions for the band’s show, while it will still be four musicians on stage, the dynamic interplay between visuals, electronics and the live sound will be taken to the next level. If you think you know Caribou, think again. Dan Snaith’s new album is the sound of the musical glass ceiling being blown away.

Swim is full of brightly textured, rapturous gems that gleam with astonishing production – and then wrenches at your heart with soulful, thoughtful reveries on the passing of time, family history and the breakdown of relationships. We can’t think of another multi-instrumentalist/ producer/ songwriter/ singer/ arranger/ composer who has the ability to harness all these talents into something as breathtakingly gorgeous yet dance floor ready as Dan Snaith AKA Caribou.

Praise for Caribou Live

‘’Jamelia’ is beautiful, ‘Sun’ is trippy and vast, and ‘Odessa’ is wonky and wonderful.’ Clash Music

‘Snaith’s group showing true musical skill in executing the live arrangements, which are notably different from the album and are brought to life with a commanding energy. Snaith has stepped up to larger venues with aplomb and one can only hope that his growing reputation continues to spread beyond those who are already aware of his considerable talent.’ The Fly *****

Main support from one of our favourite bands of the year, FACTORY FLOOR who imbibe the spirit of Joy Division as much as they channel krautrock sensibilities and a brazen love of electronics, which sees them a neat counterpoint on the bill.

Plus WALLS are a band from London made up of members Sam Willis (of ALLEZ-ALLEZ) and Alessio Natalizia (of BANJO OR FREAKOUT). Originally from Manchester, but based in London since ’96, Willis has long been an admirer of the Cologne sound, instilling his productions (and dj mixes for the influential podcast series located at www.allez-allez.co.uk) with the euphoric, pop sensibilities and deep grooves that are a KOMPAKT hallmark. Natalizia hails from Vasto, Italy but relocated to London in 2008 to pursue his musical dreams – driven by the wild guitar of This Heat and propulsive rhythms of Can as well as Burial’s inner city atmospherics and soul.

Never an avid follower of convention, Arab Strap founder Aidan John Moffat plans a Bush Hall show around the release of his new mini-album of condensed material. Having written a short song for a potential advert pitch (which he never got) he decided to apply the same economy to nine other tracks, coming up with ‘ten short short songs for modern lovers’. The mini-album features ten new recordings of no more than one minute in length.

“How To Get To Heaven From Scotland”

Deluxe Box Set Edition ‘Valentines Day release’ Saturday 14th February

Album released 16th February 2009 on Chemikal Underground

Aidan will play with his four peice band The Best-Ofs, then play with Scottish musical legend Bill Wells, and will round up the night playing solo.

Last time we heard from Aidan Moffat, it was with the wonderful, darkly humorous, spoken word album and book package I Can Hear Your Heart, which received rave reviews on its February 2008 release. Less than a year later, 35 year-old Moffat was back in a new guise, as frontman of Aidan Moffat and the Best-Ofs, who will appear at Bush Hall.

Moffat’s certainly been keeping busy since the demise of Arab Strap, the duo he fronted for 11 years from 1995 to 2006. Alongside his many musical guises, the latest of which is a collaboration with Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite named Aloha Hawaii, he’s taken up a position as an agony uncle for websiteThe Quietus, specialising in sex, of course. He’s already forming plans for the next album, and the next – But don’t expect it to be with The Best-Ofs, says Moffat.

“I’m currently of the notion that I won’t make a record with the same band or under the same name twice,” “My next album will most likely be one that I’m writing and recording with Bill Wells. I’ve also started a sequel to I Can Hear Your Heart, but it won’t be any kind of conventional music album so I don’t think that falls under the new rules. I reserve the right to change my mind anyway.”

ESBEN AND THE WITCH have been gaining momentum over the past months, releasing a super limited edition single through the Too Pure singles club, and playing a very well received set at this years Field Day festival. Their music is ethereal, only more in the eerie than Enya sense of the word, an eeriness inspired as much by books as any record – they’re as into Bacon and Bosch as they are Björk or (Kate) Bush. They hover enigmatically between goth, electronica, trip-hop and post-rock. In Fisher and Copeman’s by turns soft and stormy instrumental interference of Killing Joke’s tribal thunder, there are echoes of Aphex’s glitchy gall, of Portishead’s serene menace and of the abstract invention of Radiohead circa Kid A. Instantly captivating, they channel something romantic and gothic, a shadow of something intangible and otherworldly.

We are very pleased to announce a show with the cult band THE VASELINES. Formed in Glasgow in 1987, The Vaselines released two singles and one album, Dum Dum, on the 53rd & 3rd label. Splitting up in 1989 (in the same week their album was released), they might have faded into obscurity but for the intervention of a certain band from Seattle. Nirvana covered three Vaselines songs, helping to fuel a growing after-the-fact appreciation of their seedy, two-and-a-half chord, garage pop manifesto.

Founding members Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee remained musically active throughout the intervening years: the former with Captain America aka Eugenius and finally as a solo artist; McKee with Painkillers and Suckle.

Eugene and Frances collaborated intermittently in the intervening years. They toured jointly and played a few of the old songs together in the wake of their respective solo project releases in 2006. But an acclaimed, unannounced appearance at a fundraiser in Glasgow’s Mono for Malawi Orphan Support in 2008 was the real catalyst for their latest, exciting bout of creativity.

Ensuing tours of America (including a stand-out appearance at Sub Pop’s 20th anniversary festival, SP20), Brazil, Japan and some UK festival dates saw The Vaselines “re-connect” with wildly appreciative audiences who had blinked and missed them the first time round. Buoyed by the success of their live return, the two punk rock chums decided to go back into the studio.

THE PRESENT

Recorded outside Manchester at the Analogue Catalogue studio in Mossley with Julie McLarnon engineering and produced by Jamie Watson who produced that first album Dum Dum, Sex With An X was recorded the old-fashioned way: twelve songs in thirteen days (plus two b-sides). The Vaselines ca. 2010 is Eugene and Frances with guest musicians Stevie Jackson and Bob Kildea from Belle & Sebastian on guitar and bass, and Michael McGaughrin from the 1990s on drums. It may have taken The Vaselines 20 years to get round to making this baby, but it was worth the wait—bringing their solo careers to a climax. The irony has not been lost. Who says indie music can’t be fun? No hand-wringing on these tracks—just good clean smut with a twist of bitter.

THE FUTURE

…belongs to The Vaselines.

PLUS Schwervon

Lower East Side couple-band Matt Roth (guitar) and Nan Turner (drums) make roughhewn, exposed-brick NYC indie rock with a freshly squeezed pop twist, their young life/ young heart songs drawing inspiration from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Pixies, the more twee side of Cibo Matto and beyond. The general rule of rock duos states that for a group to really explode, one member needs to be a brutal enough talent to igniteboth halves (White Stripes, etc.), but Turner and Roth seem to be enjoying themselves enough for three, and that is just fine, too.

After a 5-year hiatus, JUNIP have returned to work on a new album and play a live European tour. Junip is most well known as the band of José González, known for his solo covers of Joy Division, the Knife and Massive Attack, but with influences ranging from Neu! to John Martyn, Junip sound mostly like Junip. They take González’s softly plucked guitar and unhurried vocals and pair them with a louder sound and underlying current of hypnotic rhythms. They craft their indie folk into dark, moody and sometimes haunting songs, while still keeping the beauty that made González’s solo work famous in the first place.

ANNA CALVI’s mastery of the electric guitar and entrancing performance have made her the musicians musician, she’s been hand picked as support on tours for The Golden Silvers, The Invisible, and Johnny Flynn. Her dark romantic songs are born of her influences – Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground, Ravel and Debussy, and all is delivered live with harmonium, vintage telecaster and dark, phonographic croon.

Plus Alice & The Cool Dudes

Alice &The Cool Dudes is the coolest band name and Alice writes the coolest, prettiest songs. Her Cool Dudes include Tom Herbert from The Invisible, Ruth Goller from Acoustic Ladyland and Joe Bentley who played trombone with Polar Bear. Alice and the Cool Dudes started as a solo project composed almost entirely on piano, but after performing and handful of solo shows without enough hands, fingers and toes to play what she wanted, Alice formed a band. Her writing draws musical inspiration from her experiences of working with musicians such as Seb Rochford, Serafina Steer and Simon Bookish and listening to Nina Simone, Elliott Smith, PJ Harvey and Prince.
