Panes are a band from London. Together they make music that conveys the flux and displacement of a life set within the limits of a city, the interruption of leisure by necessity; and the blurring of days and nights.

The bands core members are Tyson McVey, a singer and student at UCL; Shaun Savage, a recording engineer whose credits include artists such as Petite Noir, Fryars, Crystal Fighters, 2.54; and bassist Jamie Dodd.

Within their music there are nods to the contemporary leanings within RnB, rap, dance music and UK Bass culture as a whole. Yet these are treated like ghosts that dip in and out of a soundtrack that is aiming to convey a pace of life, a city and modern love far more dysfunctional and uncertain than most of us would like to admit.

Eat Your Own Ears are happy to host East India Youth at the Lexington.

The music that William Doyle then creates is absolutely astounding, an original mixture of dark Detroit techno, lo-fi psychedelic noise rock, deeply romantic Pet Shop Boys-esque synth pop and ramshackle avant-electronica. Naming himself East India Youth after the location of his flat in London’s Docklands, he set about pressing the demo CD into the hands of wandering journalists, including John Doran, founder of The Quietus: ” I’d always said that I’d cut my own head off using nail clippers before we started a record label. Therefore I’m probably more surprised than anyone to be asking you to lend your ears to the ‘Hostel’ EP on The Quietus Phonographic Corporation.”

ANNA MEREDITH
Albert Hall Manchester
Thursday 6 February 2014

£14

We are pleased to announce Anna Calvi’s February show at the stunning Albert Hall in Manchester

Her new album One Breath, is a bold and confident record that begins an exciting new chapter in this uniquely talented artist’s career. One Breath is a more personal record than its Mercury and Brit nominated predecessor. Reflective and vulnerable, it strikes a balance between optimism and despair, beauty and ugliness. The fiery elements of Anna’s debut remain, but One Breath is more instinctive and urgent, revealing a wider spectrum of textures and emotion.

“One Breath is the moment before you’ve got to open yourself up, and it’s about how terrifying that is. It’s scary and it’s thrilling. It’s also full of hope, because whatever has to happen hasn’t happened yet.” – Anna Calvi

One Breath is out on October 7th via Domino. Watch the album trailer here

Some musicians know where they’re from and where they’re going, and why. Others, such as Connan Mockasin, can only work from instinct, not only disinterested in the bigger picture as unable to see it. Take Mockasin’s first album, Forever Dolphin Love, which he only wrote and recorded because his mother suggested it. Or his new album Caramel, triggered because he liked the onomatopoeic quality of the word, and the music and words just followed.

As a 47-year-old indie rock hall of famer, Stephen Malkmus’ time is valuable. Shortly after the release of his last record with backing band the Jicks, 2011’s Mirror Traffic, Malkmus and his family moved from Portland to Berlin so that his wife, a visual artist, would have an easier time finding work.
