Woodpigeon aka Mark Andrew Hamilton will play St Pancras Old Church and announces a new album, released the week before the show.

His fifth full-length album, Thumbtacks and Glue, is out February 25 on Fierce Panda (26th on Boompa in Canada/US).  While this is Woodpigeon’s first proper full-length release since 2010 the past few years have been anything but quiet for Mark Andrew Hamilton with the release of the bonus full-length Balladeer later in 2010 and the tour-only full-length, Diamonds, this September coinciding with his North American tour supporting Patrick Wolf.  There have been multiple EPs and singles, a move from Calgary, Alberta to Vienna, Austria, tours of Europe with Junip and Andrew Bird, plus a slew of headlining and festival dates.  The Observer declared Woodpigeon a “Best New Discovery” in June of this year, while Canada’s Post City Magazine called Hamilton’s September Toronto performance “awe-inspiring”, and the Saatchi Gallery awarded Woodpigeon the “New Talent Award” at their inaugural “Glittering Prizes” that month.

Woodpigeon continues to refine and expand upon his sound with Thumbtacks and Glue, recorded in Calgary, Alberta with producer Arran Fisher and mastered by Ryan Morey.  Known for his stunning and heart-wrenching orchestral pop, Thumbtacks and Glue shows off Hamilton at his most diverse, from “Children Should Be Seen And Not Heard” crunching guitar and “As Read In The Pine Bluff Commercial” pure pop to the delicacy of “Little Wings” and the bitter sting of “Robin Song”.  This is the sound of a songwriter just hitting his stride.

After the Four Tet-curated all-nighter DJ extravaganza at Brixton Academy, we’re happy to announce a live show at Heaven, the first since the release of Pink, Four Tet’s recent album.

Four Tet has released a number of vinyl-only singles over the past year, and Pink brings these together, with two new tracks as a digital-only release, via his TEXT label.

Support from FIIUM SHAARRK

Fiium Shaarrk is a new trio, uniting the formidable skills and the improbably diverse backgrounds of Rudi Fischerlehner (drums) Maurizio Ravalico (percussion) and Isambard Khroustaliov (electronics).

No Fiction Now! is their debut album, due for release in the autumn of 2012 via Not Applicable.

Alternating freely between a jigsaw of unquantised proto-dance grooves, the luxuriant austerity of 20th century composed percussion music and the fertile landscape of live electronics, Fiium Shaarrk’s music is at once visceral, cerebral and visionary; at times joyfully naive and at others virtuosic and painstakingly scientific.

Fiium Shaarrk draw openly from a diverse array of past musical influences; from Tortoise to King Crimson, Max Roach to Napalm Death, Autechre to Xenakis and Dubstep to Maracatu. However, their unreasonably unassuming explorative music is most unquestionably addressed to the men and women of today

Nathan Fake

SPECIAL GUESTS
PLAN B
Wednesday 27 February 2013

£10

We are thrilled to announce the return of Norfolk-born electronica mastermind Nathan Fake with a show at Brixton’s Plan B. He has kept fans of fuzzy-edged synths and maximal acidic techno beats alike guessing ever since his debut release at the tender age of 19. Early piano lessons floundered when it came to learning to read music: deciding that this level of abstraction was that little bit too abstract for him, however the limitations of his formal classical training have in no way hindered him in his pursuit of professional success. Now based at the centre of the action in London town, from his bedroom studio base, Nathan divides his time between writing new music, touring, DJ-ing and remixing. Apart from several 12″ and full-length releases for Border Community, Nathan Fake has given his computer edit funk treatment to artists like label-mate James Holden, Radiohead, DFA’s Shocking Pinks or Jon Hopkins, just to name a few. A young man at the beginning of his career, showing a level of accomplishment and attention to detail in his productions which ought to put many a more established producer to shame, these are exciting times for Nathan Fake, make sure you don’t miss him this February!

CHVRCHES were voted #5 in the BBC Sound of 2013, and #2 in the UK Blog Sound of 2013.

CHVRCHES are Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry – three distinct individuals bearing three distinct personalities on a consummate whole. Combining indie sensibilities and aesthetics with barbed pop hooks and and an unhealthy obsession with Prince, CHVRCHES take elements of classic electronica, hip hop and post-punk, and yet sound like none of the above. Their blend of classic and modern analogue synthesisers, bruised beats and crude vocal sampling comes to the fore in their debut single THE MOTHER WE SHARE, as it did in LIES, their first track that seeped onto the internet in mid-2012.

Their ambitious and audacious self-produced debut Violet Cries was instantly captivating…romantic and gothic, a shadow of something intangible and otherworldly. Think a mix of Siouxise, Slowdive, and early 4AD. The band display an effortless aptitude for creating a sense of drama and intrigue, and bewitching live performances.

““Now, I’d always said that I’d cut my own head off using nail clippers before we started a record label. Therefore I’m probably more surprised than anyone to be asking you to lend your ears to the Hostel EP by East India Youth, the first release on the Quietus Phonographic Corporation label. I would have re-mortgaged my soul to get this music out there.” – John Doran, The Quietus

“Tim Hecker-esque electronic soundscapes and Byrne-and-Bowie-indebted, whimsical pop. Experimental and moving, strange and tuneful. A rare talent.” – Time Out, No.1, Best New Bands of 2013

“Appealingly mental” – Alexis Petridis, Guardian

“This record is it’s own thing, in it’s own bubble and time” says James Young about his band’s second album, and while it sounds logical, try and think of how many records actually embrace their own sense of self and space. News From Nowhere is certainly one such creation, and one arrived at via a very unique path.

Darkstar first coalesced in the underground, electronic thrum of London’s nascent grime and dubstep sphere in the middle 2000’s, growing from attending the now-fabled early FWD club nights to releasing a pair of game-changing 12” singles on Kode 9’s fledgling Hyperdub label. What followed was a fitful and productive period culminating in a discarded album’s worth of tracks, the crucial introduction of vocalist James Buttery to the fold and, finally – the release of their debut full-length North, to wide acclaim.

“This is a totally different record to North. It’s somewhat brighter in mood, but deeper in feeling and intention…it’s much more rhythmic and fluid. It moves quicker.”

After touring ‘North’ across the globe, James Buttery, James Young and Aiden Whalley aka Darkstar decamped to a house in the countryside of West Yorkshire, secluding themselves from the distractions of London and writing as a trio for the first time. Ultimately, News From Nowhere is a reflection of the time they spent together there. Says Young, “Every place warrants a story. No matter where it is, how quiet, remote or disconnected. There are moments in people’s everyday lives, no matter how subtle, that can be documented and talked about in great detail. The instances spiral and ascend and take on their own course, altering the perception of how even the slightest change in a day can be felt deeply.”

Eventually proceedings moved from the band’s makeshift digital studio in their house to producer Richard Formby’s (Sonic Boom/Hood/Wild Beasts) dusty studio enclave, full of tape machines and analog synthesizers. The songs that had been inspired by English prog-rock and obscure techno and created as loops based on the band’s affinity for hip-hop production grew into sublimely arranged works. In the end, the album arrived at an altogether singular existence, delving into the moments between moments and elevating them to epic, kaleidoscopic heights. So, the journey from Nowhere begins.

SAVAGES

Electric Ballroom
Thursday 21 February 2013

Savages play their biggest show to date. One of the most exciting live bands around bring their hypnotic explosive post-punk and driving motorik bass to London’s Electric Ballroom on 21st February 2013.

Savages are a London based four-piece, combining a mixture of guitars with a groovy no wave / punk rhythmic session. They have subsequently been compared to the great post punk bands of the1980s, Joy Division and Magazine to name but a few. Gemma Thompson’s ability to wrap her guitar solo around the hypnotic bass of Ayse Hassan and intertwine with the rest of the band before splitting off, all within the space of a few seconds, this pulled together with the awesome energy of Jehnny Beth who has been likened to Joe Strummer.

Sweet Baboo is pleased to announce his new single ‘Let’s Go Swimming Wild’ will be released on February 11th through Moshi Moshi Records.

Totem are found lurking within a cloud of melodic post punk, epiphany and unstable animation. 3 of them, from Shepherd’s Bush are the product of a wide variety of ideas and influences, spawning an accessible yet imaginative vision.

Taken from Sweet Baboo’s forthcoming album ‘Ships’, his fourth record is a concept album about the sea and was recorded with long time collaborator The Voluntary Butler Scheme earlier this year.

A native of the North Wales countryside, Sweet Baboo aka Stephen Black is a single minded, idiosyncratic singer possessing an ear for sparkling melody and a gift for a deft lyrical turn – from darkly funny to piercingly tender, twinkling boastful to deliciously self-deprecating.

Having already been shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize in 2011 for his third album ‘I’m A Dancer/Songs About Sleeping’, ‘Ships’ shows Black’s evolution as a songwriter and musician is still very much in motion, the new record is a marked step up from his earlier material and reveals that his true talent is only beginning to be revealed.

‘Let’s Go Swimming Wild’ conjures images of rugged coastlines and losing yourself and your troubles in the sea. A restless soul, Black is indebted to the Welsh countryside; the Wales Tourist Board responded by using his song ‘How I’d Live My Life’ in a series of TV adverts.

Over the last few years, Sweet Baboo has played at SXSW, Latitude, Green Man and The Camden Crawl, toured Europe with the likes of Johnny Flynn, Slow Club and Islet as well as recording radio sessions with 6Music’s Marc Riley, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and 6Music’s Stuart Maconie.

Black’s productivity is all the more remarkable given his extra-curricular activities which have seen him working with an ever-growing array of musicians including Cate Le Bon, Slow Club and H. Hawkline. He has also performed with and produced Euros Childs, The Pictish Trail, The Voluntary Butler Scheme and Islet and collaborated with Gruff Rhys.

Influenced by the likes of The Beach Boys, Daniel Johnston and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Black indulges his love of brass heavy pop on ‘Ships’ – due Spring 2013.

Having toured and performed alongside Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) throughout 2010, Gilles Peterson gave the band wider recognition with a live session on his Radio One show, as well as a performance at Gilles’ Worldwide Awards.

More recently, after jaw-dropping performances in Fabric’s Room One, the duo took their intense electronic music to New York’s Roseland Ballroom to support the most recent fans of the group Radiohead in September 2011.

With a Floating Points-produced Four Tet collaboration set for release on Text in January, followed by a much-anticipated album on Smalltown Supersound in the Spring, 2013 is set to be a big year.

Julio Bashmore needs little introduction at the moment, It might seem counterintuitive for a producer to detach themselves from one of the planet’s most thriving music scenes, but in the case of Julio Bashmore, that’s exactly what he did growing up in bass music hotbed, Bristol. You see, Julio’s first love is house music. And operating just on the peripheries of the city’s scene has allowed him to quietly cultivate a take on the genre unlike any other.
