After a brilliant sold out show at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in November, we are pleased to announce Django Django will be back in February to celebrate the release of their long awaited debut album on 30th January.

For the last three years, Django Django have been busy doing great things in the East London bedroom slept in by their drummer, producer and de facto leader David Maclean. The result of those great things is a great self-titled debut record.

Amid all the diverse moods and ideas of Django Django (all there, perhaps, as the imagination wanders to stave off bedroom boredom?) it’s a lyric from “Silver Rays” that most capably sums up its parent album.

“We venture out into the great uncharted,” sings Neff, “go far away from any beaten track… Enjoy it now before it’s far departed, you know that once it’s gone that there’ll be no way back.”

The lyrics can be read as a desire to explore first, and a tribute to what Dixon calls their decision to “stick to their guns” when outside forces tried to convince them to forget everything they’d seen.

“A lot of people expected us to ditch our recordings and start all over again, but that was never something we wanted to do. It’s great to have a body of work – something you can point to, and say this is the story so far.”

Baxter Dury

FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE

After selling out Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, Baxter Dury returns to play at XOYO in February.

Produced by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Portishead) and recorded in Baxter’s hometown of London, the album will be released in digital and CD format. ‘Claire’ is the first single to be taken from it, released on 1st July.

‘Happy Soup’ is worlds away from the darkness and romantic disappointments of previous LPs ‘Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift’ (2002) and ‘Floor Show’ (2005), so much so that Dury refers to his new effort as “seaside psychedelia”. Its ten tracks narrate everyday tales of dancing on the patio in Marigolds and seedy sex in Portugal, yet Baxter’s lyrical playfulness and acute character analysis ensure the songs are anything but mundane. Just take the amusing picture painted of London’s Portobello Road in love song ‘Trellic’ or ‘The Sun’ in which Madelaine Heart’s honeyed guest vocals swim in-between bursts of Baxter’s mad, infectious laughter and colourful, rippling guitars. First single ‘Claire’ meanwhile slings his cockney charm around bus fare funk and unforgettable bass hooks. It’s not quite all rainbows and carousels though – had Joy Division scored a Batman soundtrack, the looping bass and menacing spoken-drawl of ‘Picnic On The Edge’ would undoubtedly have made the cut.

‘Happy Soup’ tracklisting:

  1. Isabel
  2. Claire
  3. Leak At The Disco
  4. Afternoon
  5. Happy Soup
  6. Trellic
  7. Picnic On The Edge
  8. Hotel In Brixton
  9. The Sun
  10. 10. Trophies

Plus support from WE WERE EVERGREEN

We Were Evergreen are an alternative indie-electro-pop band from France. The Parisian trio were born in 2008, after a new year’s resolution that, for once, actually stuck. Brought together by a shared fondness for all kinds of pop music and nursery rhymes, they tell stories of small trees growing too fast, of yodelling yaks and children flying south for the winter: stories of adolescence, of things lost, then found –then lost again. There’s a naïve freshness to their toy-like instruments, and their mellow-yet-uplifting choruses will inevitably get caught in your brain – just throw in some live sampling, a lot of percussions and a dash of electro, and you’ll find your hands and feet joining in too

After great acclaim for Hall Music, and the long overdue return from LONEY DEAR, we can announce a show at London’s Bush Hall.

“charming..uplifting..impossibly soothing” – MOJO

“deeply textured…sweet melancholy” – Q

“Some wonderfully sad Swedish pop, made cheerful by twinkling percussion and a gorgeous melody” – Guardian

“a seductively melancholy and unashamedly serious album, that claws insistently at the heartstrings” – Uncut

“My heart sees Svanangen excel to new heights of production and songsmithery” – TheLineOfBestFit

“Loney dear has gently orbited universal acclaim for the best part of a decade, ‘My Heart’ shoots crystal synths, funk-pop bass and a lugubrious, bloody-nosed wail fireworking skywards to remedy all that” – NME

The video for new single My Heart available to watch on The Line Of Best Fit here:

Plus support from YOUNG DREAMS

After uploading three tracks on their Facebook page exactly a year ago the band quickly received an overwhelming response from both national and international music press and blogs. This included attention from both The Guardian, XL Recording, Rough Trade,  The fader and national music radio shows.   Fusing Tropicália, psychedelic rock, classical, symphonic arrangements and traditional pop recalling the classic sounds of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, Young Dreams both adheres to and upends the conventional definitions of pop music, creating a sound that’s at once refreshingly familiar and daringly unique. Newly signed to Modular Recording, debut album will be out early next fall.

Errors simultaneously announce a brilliant new album, and tour.

Errors Release Have Some Faith In Magic out on Rock Action Records January 30th 2012

Free download ‘Earthscore’ available now from here

After a brief but hugely-influential time away Errors return with ‘Have Some Faith In Magic,’ on Rock Action Records; their third album, it counts as far and away their greatest shift in sound yet, heralding in a sound of serenely cosmo-gazing sugar-tipped pop; previously hinted at with Spring single ‘Magna Encarta,’ a further preview is provided with free download  ‘Earthscore.’

A group who emerged at the tale end of a period when anything purely-instrumental and guitar-based became lazily tagged “post-rock,” Errors have now distanced themselves from that loose genre so much that any fleeting comparison to it is now completely redundant. ‘Have Some Faith In Magic’ is an LP of sprawling pop, with delicious hooks applied liberally across post-electro scatterings; a complete turn away from previously lauded albums ‘It’s Not Something But It Is Like Whatever,’ and last year’s ‘Come Down With Me’ – not least with vocals now being included prominently for the first time.

“It was just something that naturally happened,” comments the group’s Steev Livingstone, “we had the idea to put vocals in the music a while ago but we always intended that they should be treated as another instrument. We’ve used them in a way that sits really naturally so the music and the vocals don’t feel like separate entities.”

Fresh from a summer supporting label mates (and bosses) Mogwai in the US, Errors can announce that they’ll again be supporting the band at a dual homecoming gig at Glasgow’s famous Barrowlands on December 22nd with a headlining tour taking place in February. Errors’ fans have long had their faith rewarded by the band; their third album only looks set to continue that trends.

Plus support from Remember Remember

Remember Remember- aka Graeme Ronald- excels at creating existential soundscapes through looped samples, minimalist keys and twinkling glockenspiels that have the power to burrow through to the very core of your emotional being… A sensitive debut of epic proportions. NME 8/10 ..

Pianist Matthew Bourne will play at London’s Café OTO on February 15th to mark the release of his first ever solo studio album, Montauk Variations (out Feb 7). Bourne’s extraordinary physical performance on the intimate venue’s grand piano is not to be missed.

With Montauk Variations, Bourne has reinvented his approach by stripping away the clutter and quirkiness characteristic of previous work. Fragility and romanticism have come to the fore while the performances still carry the Bourne hallmarks of unpredictability and intensity. You can hear a selection of songs from Montauk Variations here now. Let me know if you’d like to hear the full album!

Bourne first rose to prominence in 2001 when he won a Perrier Jazz Award, following that with the ‘Innovation’ accolade at the BBC Radio Jazz Awards in 2002. Since then he’s worked with a multitude of different projects, including The Electric Dr M, Bourne/Davis/Kane, Bilbao Syndrome, Nostalgia 77, Trio Grande, Broadway Project and more.

March 2012 will see Bourne head to China as part of a residency programme organised by The British Council and PRS For Music Foundation. Joining Imogen Heap, Jamie Woon and Gareth Bonello, the programme is designed to enable innovative British musicians to explore new musical trerritory, reach new audiences and write new material in the context of an emerging, international market. Click here for more details.

A snippet of Matthew’s recent show at Bishopsgate Institute was captured on camera by the team behind the residency programme and is well worth a peek to see the very talented man at work!
