Astronomers define the mean sun as an imaginary star, moving at the pace of our equator’s rotation. Perhaps it is the impossible setting of this sun Brasstronaut has pursued since the release of their critically acclaimed 2010 debut, Mt. Chimera. Cresting the momentum of that album – a SOCAN Echo Prize for Canadian song of the year, a Polaris Prize long-listing, and chart-topping singles on The Hype Machine – Brasstronaut embarked on a comprehensive world tour, seeking out the mean sun’s fabled dusk. On their sophomore album, Brasstronaut has finally captured its fleeting blaze, and has returned to reveal the radiant Mean Sun.

This is not merely Brasstronaut’s moment to bask in Mean Sun’s instant eminence. This is the affirmation of their ever-evolving promise: to tirelessly chase, like the elusive light of an imaginary sun, brave and startling new inventions.

Tempered by heartache and defiance Oxford’s Wild Swim. Swarming with expansive guitars, haunting vocals and delicate keys, their 2012 debut single ‘Echo’ touches on anguish and mythology and was The Guardian’s band of the day, as well as The Sunday Times Hottest Download

Produced by the legendary Steve Osborne (New Order, Suede), it’s an introduction to the five-piece who have drawn early comparisons to the likes of XX, Alt J and fellow Oxfordians Foals. Within its minimalist electronics and unconvential structure, ‘the band nod in the direction of Kid A-era Radiohead and The Associates.

Still in their late teens, Wild Swim met at school, forming at the age of just 13. Fast-forward five years, and they are BBC Introducing in Oxford’s most hotly tipped band for 2013.  With Radio 1 support from Huw Stephens and playlisted at XfM.   Richard is currently training to be a tailor on Saville Row while the others are all at university.

Live, the band are a must-see. Sansom cuts a charismatic figure whose voice mesmerises as the songs shape-shift unpredictably, offset by the electro-heavy sound that is, at times, almost operatic

Wild Swim are: Richard Sansom (Vocals) / Jamie Jay (Guitar/Keyboard) / Carlos Posada (Guitar/Keyboard) / Jacob Lively (Bass) / Sam Robinson (Drums)

Clean Bandit is a band with four core members who call on an array of vocal collaborators to create their unique sound. The culture clash of bass, beats and soaring strings evokes memories of classic Massive Attack and their live shows, when they are joined by crazy dance crews, evokes classic Basement Jaxx yet all this is done with a brand new twist.

Debut release “Mozart’s House” on their own label Incredible Industries achieved great support from DJs like Nick Grimshaw, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Eddie Temple Morris and Fearne Cotton. The self directed/produced music video for their second single “UK Shanty” was commissioned by Channel 4, featuring supermodel Lily Cole as a mermaid-siren, was premiered on the channel’s Random Acts programme.

First signing to The Quietus Phonographic Corporation, EAST INDIA YOUTH play the Sebright Arms. William Doyle, a 22 year old multi-instrumentalist who resides in the Docklands (hence the East India moniker) is the mastermind behind the hugely feted Hostel EP

Tickets from Ticket Web

East India Youth – who is responsible for the love-lorn synth pop of ‘Looking For Someone’ and the chemically-dazed rapture of ‘Heaven, How Long’ from the stunning Hostel EP – is actually one young man. William Doyle, a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Bournemouth, cut his teeth in an indie group called The Fourfathers while still a teenager. Their demo was rinsed by Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music and they completed a couple of tours with the Undertones, but the frontman was already growing tired of the band format and frustrated with the slow progress of the group.

Doyle says: “My interest in electronic music, dance, ambient and noise was becoming more and more prevalent and I had been recording a lot of tracks on the side. That material later formed part of my demo. The day I finished this recording in May 2012 was the day I left the band.”

The music that he had created was absolutely astounding, an original mixture of dark Detroit techno, lo-fi psychedelic noise rock, deeply romantic Pet Shop Boys-esque synth pop and ramshackle avant-electronica. Naming himself East India Youth after the location of his flat in London’s Docklands, he set about pressing the demo CD into the hands of wandering journalists.

One hack to be handed the demo was John Doran of The Quietus. He says: “I was watching Factory Floor when I met William. He was wearing a totally next-level shirt. You can’t go far wrong when you’re wearing a good shirt and I liked the band name as well.

“I always listen to demos and, to be perfectly honest, they’re nearly always awful but this one was just… brilliant. After about a month of playing it, I realised that it was actually my favourite music of the last twelve months. After weeks of breathlessly pressing the CD onto people it was Luke Turner, my co-editor at the Quietus, who first suggested that we should release some of his material.

“Now, I’d always said that I’d cut my own head off using nail clippers before we started a record label. I’d learned too much from watching other sites and magazines pour all of their time, money and talent into them, just to watch them spectacularly implode. It was, I said, like withdrawing all your money from a cash machine and setting fire to it while simultaneously flushing your own head down a toilet filled with goat’s piss. Therefore I’m probably more surprised than anyone to be asking you to lend your ears to the Hostel EP by East India Youth, the first release on the Quietus Phonographic Corporation label. But when you play this CD I hope you’ll understand why Luke and I made that nerve-wracking trip to the cash machine. To be honest though, I would have re- mortgaged my soul to get this music out there.”

A Hawk And A Hacksaw

£13

New Mexico’s A Hawk and A Hacksaw return with a new double LP ‘You Have Already Gone To The Other World: Music Inspired By Paradjanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’, which will be released through LM Duplication on March 25th.

In 2012, Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost scored a live soundtrack to the unforgettable and inspirational 1964 film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by the legendary Ukranian director Sergey Paradjanov. They took the soundtrack on tour, accompanying the film live, and performed in cinemas and theatres. You Have Already Gone To The Other World is the product of those tours and the evolution of the soundtrack into something that can stand on its own: a double album of new compositions and traditional folk tunes that have been inspired by the surreal folk magic of the film, sprinkled with the wondrous music and foley from this piece of cinematic history.

Produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, this is the first AHAAH album in a long time on which its two primary members, Barnes and Trost, play pretty much every last note (save for a couple of Dieterich guitar cameos). Yet the instrumentation is far from minimal, and the songs often explode into the rich ornamentation that one would expect from the band.  Dieterich’s production values and sense of experimentation have elevated AHAAH into new territories of folk psychedelia, with the band’s own personality colouring the traditional forms they explore with such joy like never before. It’s also the bands most dynamic album since they began their Eastern European adventure, with the thundering percussion and dramatic arcs of violin on the title track being counterpointed by majestic solo pieces for hammer dulcimer (Where no horse neighs, and no crow flies) and piano (The Snow in Kryvorivnya),  stately organ-led processionals (O Lord, Saint George, bewitch Ivan, make him mine) and original sound and melodies from the film woven in throughout.

Support comes from Ryan Francesconi (previously best known for his work as the musical director on Joanna Newsom’s stunning triple album ‘Have One On Me’). Now, he prepares to return to European stages to perform with his partner, violinist Mirabai Peart, as the duo release a new album on Bella Union in December.

Steve Mason has announced details of his new album entitled Monkey Minds In The Devil’s Time which will be released by Double Six on Monday March 18th 2013.

Monkey Minds In The Devil’s Time is an album saturated with politics.  With a title referring to the Buddhist term for an easily distracted brain, the album features 20 songs: 9 recorded in London with producer Dan Carey and 11 short linking pieces self-produced in Mason’s Fife studio.  Monkey Minds In the Devil’s Time is an album that has been shaped by the current global political climate and the lack of dissenting voices in music and popular culture in general.  The righteous, undaunted anger at the heart of the album has helped to create Mason’s best record to date.

All songs on the album were written by Mason, while Dan Carey appears on bass throughout the record and acclaimed London MC Mystro provides vocals on “More Money, More Fire”.

Watch the video for album track “Fight Them Back” HERE.  A protest song for a post-London riots era, “Fight Them Back” hangs on a madly catchy, fantastically confrontational chorus and is matched with an equally striking video.

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro

ADAM GREEN and BINKI SHAPIRO announce a date at Village Underground and release their new eponymous album

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro are two gifted artists with a bi-coastal friendship and a brand new project. What began as an acquaintance, with a mutual appreciation for each other’s music, soon turned serious when an idea was sparked to collaborate on an album of original duets. As old-fashioned romantics, the pair put their impressive songwriting talents to work in both New York City and Los Angeles, making frequent trips to compose together. The breaks between visits allowed time for their personal lives to throw some emotional curveballs, generously providing inspiration for the next writing sessions.

The result, Adam Green & Binki Shapiro (Rounder/Concord Records – January 29th, 2013), is deceptively pretty, filled with the echo of late-sixties folk-pop and an easygoing rapport between two captivating singers. These songs have twists and turns that reveal more with repeat listens, as their protagonists unfurl relationship tales with bittersweet recall.  Visit www.adamandbinki.com to hear the track “Here I Am” from their upcoming album!

“Adam Green & Binki Shapiro share the same creative brain, comparable to the electric relationship shared by Yoko Ono and John Lennon… the duo’s voices swirl and intertwine seamlessly, in tune with their late-’60s folk-pop vibes.” – MAGNET

“Pleasingly retro boy-girl duet from indie’s latest kooky couple, Adam Green and Binki Shapiro…arrangements bring Nancy & Lee-level charisma…” – MOJO Magazine

Adam Green first came to prominence as one-half of the Grammy-winning Moldy Peaches before embarking on a successful and prolific solo career. Recent months have seen him add ‘filmmaker’ and ‘visual artist’ to his list of accomplishments. Binki Shapiro was one-third of Little Joy, the Brazilian-accented Los Angeles trio formed with Fabrizio Moretti and Rodrigo Amarante that enchanted listeners with its critically acclaimed 2008 album. She also collaborated with Beck, MGMT, Devendra Banhart, and Wolfmother to cover Songs of Leonard Cohen for Beck’s Record Club in 2009.

YOUNG DREAMS
Colours
Wednesday 3 April 2013

£7.50

Sinkane is the project of the Sudanese-born musician Ahmed Gallab. Gallab cut his own teeth as a youngster in the punk DIY landscape of middle America, and then found himself touring far and wide as a member of Yeasayer, Caribou, Eleanor Friedberger, Born Ruffians, and Of Montreal. He has emerged from it all as Sinkane, a project that identifies a renaissance within the space and spirit of the outposts of contemporary music. With an aesthetic range seamlessly shifting from soul to rock, and from jazz to pop, Sinkane’s vibe is timeless and the sound is now.

Young Dreams

After uploading three tracks on their Facebook page November 2010 Young Dreams quickly received an overwhelming response from both national and international music press and blogs. This included attention from The Guardian, XL Recording, Rough Trade, Nylon Magazine, The fader and national music radio shows.  Two 7” was release on Tellé  Records spring 2011. They also got to play key festivals like the Hove festival, By:Larm and Camden Crawl. The Bergen based Norwegian collective now just has to wait for the rest of the world to catch up. Fusing Tropicália, psychedelic rock, classical, symphonic arrangements and traditional pop recalling the classic sounds of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, Young Dreams both adheres to and upends the conventional definitions of pop music, creating a sound that’s at once refreshingly familiar and daringly unique.

Animal Collective will be the kneejerk comparison – though Young Dreams has only heard a few of the band’s songs – but the band’s influences go deeper than those of their Brooklyn peers. “I’m a big fan of the harmonies and arrangements of the romantic period of classical music,” says Tellez. “I love composers like Edvard Grieg and Stravinsky. But I’m also heavily inspired by people like [lounge music pioneer] Martin Denny and [Argentine composer] Waldo de los Rios.”

Young Dreams exist in their own world; one influenced by the past but always looking forward. A sovereign nation of 12 like-minded souls, restless, eager and always dreaming.

Recently Young Dreams signed with Modular Recording. Debut album is expected to be released early fall 2012.

Brooklyn’s TEEN came together when Teeny Lieberson, formerly of Here We Go Magic, left her post in the latter band in order to make music with her sisters Katherine and Lizzie and their longtime friends Jane Herships and former member Maia Ibar. Forgoing girl-group gimmickry and fervor, the band’s digital-only debut EP, Little Doods, fleshed out a sound of languid, lo-fi psyche pop redolent of Paisley Underground bands like Opal and Rain Parade. Since releasing the EP in April 2011, they have steadily honed their sound around New York and readied their first long-player, In Limbo.

Recorded during the summer of 2011 in a converted barn in rural Connecticut, In Limbo puts pop and tribal elements to the fore. Opener “Better” is a Suicide-esque march toward euphoria through repetition. “Sleep in Noise” comes on like a neo-psychedelic tribal stomp with a Spector-esque drive, while “Unable,” an all-but-shapeless mass of organ swells and tremolo synths provides a loose structure for their transcendent vocal acrobatics. The density and layers of the band’s morphing keyboards, driving synths and jungle drums let their finely arranged vocals sit gloriously on top, each member’s contribution shining through.

In Limbo was mixed and produced in collaboration with Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum). His influence & guidance is subtly evident throughout, adding sympathetic undertones and ambience to the band’s well defined and inspiring songs.

Plus there is a free entry after party to help celebrate the easter weekend with Dark Bells Djing till late!
