Blackout

The Apiary
Thursday 12 May 2011
Sold Out

£12.50

BLACKOUT is a new series of music events based on a completely novel idea. The audiences are kept in the dark in all senses of the phrase. Live performances by exciting acts will take place in complete darkness, and the bands’ identities are never revealed.

This unique run of gigs is the result of a collaboration between eclectic promoters EYOE and Harrier and Zinnerwell, AKA Sam Potter, of Late Of The Pier.

For Blackout audiences, the sensory distortion of total darkness forces a complete focus on the subtleties of sound. For the artists, absolute anonymity creates an opportunity to perform and experiment free from expectations and preconceptions.

For all involved in Blackout, it will be the most unusual and immersive live music experience.

Twin Shadow

CHAD VALLEY + MICKEY MOONLIGHT DJ
Scala
Wednesday 11 May 2011

£10 IN ADVANCE
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THETWINSHADOW

If you missed out on tickets to Twin Shadows show at the Lexington this January, then you are in luck, as we announce a new show at the Scala, with exclusive pre-sale. For £20 you can get a ticket to the show, plus a limited edition Twin Shadow t-shirt, only available from 12pm 10th January till Friday 14th January. Click here for more details.

Twin Shadow is the nom de plume of Dominican-born George Lewis Jr. The troubled son of a hairdresser and a “teacher who lived many lives” (semi-professional football, massage therapy, film maker), his formative years were spent in suburban Florida. It was there that George made he first forays into music, experimenting with sound from the age of 14. He’s not looked back since.

Escaping the palm trees and still heat of the Sunshine State, George travelled north to New York where he began writing debut album Forget over a series of months in his Brooklyn apartment. Inevitably, his nomadic impulses meant that the sound of Twin Shadow wasn’t to remain tied to the Big Apple. Drawing inspiration from extended trips abroad to Copenhagen and Berlin, and a distinctly European sensibility that takes in Can, Bowie and a classic pop melodicism, Twin Shadow has proven broad in scope and enterprise.

As such, Forget offers a panoramic view of a musical landscape that spans decades. Veering from the full-throttle power ballad ‘Slow’ to the shimmering Niles Rodgers-tinged disco of ‘At My Heels’ and the new wave synthesized breaks of ‘Castles In the Snow’, Forget speaks of a carnivorous musical mind not afraid to venture down unknown paths.

It was venturing down these paths that led Twin Shadow to the attention of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor in 2009. Impressed by the ambition of the music, Taylor not only lent his skills to the project by co-producing the record, but also offered to release Forget in the US on his newly established label, Terrible Records. Soon after, Twin Shadow signed to 4AD for the rest of the world, a deal George sees as allowing him to “share his music through his dream label”.

CHAD VALLEY is the solo effort of Jonquil’s Hugo Manuel. Manuel offers another fresh take on Ibiza bliss. Combining New Order’s thumping bass and introspective lyrics with a more chilled out atmosphere, Chad Valley bring a new voice to electro scene.

Back in 2009, Hot Chip co-frontman Alexis Taylor linked up with Spritualized / Spring Heel Jack member John Coxon, This Heat drummer Charles Hayward, and former Derek Bailey collaborator Pat Thomas to form About Group.

The band originally formed to make a record of improvised music for the Treader label, having never played together before as a whole group. The album took them a day to make. After a clutch of live performances (supporting Gang Gang Dance, playing Ornette Coleman’s Meltdown Festival and even Glastonbury, among others) they regrouped to record their second album ‘Start and Complete’, another one day recording affair.

Start and Complete was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. It is a collection of songs that blur the line between improvisation and good ol’ fashioned songwriting structure, as intimate sounding as the environment in which they were created. In order to keep a level of spontaneity in the recording Taylor wrote all the songs and gave ‘bare-bones’ demos of them to his bandmates just a few days before they recorded. The result gives the album a live-in-the-studio feel with a rotating line up of drums, wurlitzer, organ, piano, electric guitar and electronic textures as well as Taylor’s yearning vocal lines.

It’s in no way an ‘in your face’ record, but something far more thoughtful, engineered by the group’s instincts to create subtle shifts in the music’s direction and tone, something which becomes even more apparent when Thomas’ electronic flourishes take centre stage at points throughout the album.

‘Start and Complete’ is released on Domino on 18th April 2011 and is available on CD, vinyl and digitally.

£17.50
WWW.BARBICAN.ORG.UK/MUSIC/EVENT-DETAIL.ASP?ID=12100

BILL CALLAHAN (Smog) radiates a peculiarly male energy: an unspecified kind of careworn rage, an acute sense of restlessness. As an autobiographer, Callahan is a rogue trader with an unreliable commodity, a conscientious objector to the confessors club that constitutes singer-songwriting.
Every time the singer-songwriter Bill Callahan puts out a record, you want to listen lyrics-first. His words drip out so slowly that you could stone-carve an album’s worth of them without hitting pause. There’s also usually some evolution there. You want to know what new psychoses and vocabulary and levels of intent his characters have taken on: distanced and bratty; sentimental and sociopathic; dry and metaphysical; grateful and generous.

Bill Callahan releases his new album ‘Apocalypse’ on April 19th.

Plus special guest SOPHIA KNAPP

New York based Sophia Knapp’s ethereal voice, made of sky and sea, glides like a falcon then whispers low in your ear like a lover. Her songs are sophisticated and succinct, painting scenes rich with technicolor detail: tales of city living, romance, and magic. This is pop music of our time, blending modern sonic elements with the impact of vocalists like Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, and Kate Bush. Sophia is currently recording her debut LP, slated for release on Drag City. She is also a member of rock band Cliffie Swan, formerly known as Lights.

London based five piece DUOLOGUE emerged last year from a number of self curated events across the city. Fusing patched up electronic music over stomping guitar-driven marches, rumbling bottom end bass and atmospheric violin and vocals the result is a unique sound and an audio journey of epic proportions. The ethos behind their majestically experimental yet melodic songs is to the serve the sound and make the music centre stage.

2010 will be remembered as the year that CHILLY GONZALES finally made it in the UK, with new album Ivory Tower receiving huge critical acclaim and best of year accolades everywhere from Clash and DJ magazines to the Rough Trade Shops. With heavy airplay and that iPad commercial, ‘Never Stop’ was the track that didn’t go away. And as the buzz on James Blake grew, thanks in part to his supreme cover of the Gonzo-penned ‘Limit To Your Love’, Chilly Gonzales became more than just a name to drop.
Well, 2011 starts with a bang, as new single ‘You Can Dance’ is released on the 28th of February. A euphoric hand-clap piano jamboree. You couldn’t get a more upbeat disco-soul number.
Finally, or is that finale, Chilly confirms his biggest headline show in the UK so far with the Ivory Tower Show, a ‘Double Penetration’ live extravaganza happening on the 5th of May: two grand pianos, two drummers and special guests JARVIS COCKER (Pulp) and COCKNBULLKID.

Peckham-based duo MOUNT KIMBIE have already caused a stir with their atmospheric releases, a percussive and experimental take on dubstep. Dominic Maker and Kai Campos first two eps caused a commotion when released last year, undergoing reworks from the likes of Faulty dl, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio.

From dubstep to post rock, traces of influence are visible, but the band’s sound is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, they float through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.

CREEP are two girls from Brooklyn producing dark brooding electronica with shades of the gothic mastery that links them to other dark acts like Zola Jesus and Salem. The duo are calling in the likes of Nina Sky and Planningtorock to guest on tracks, as well as having The xx’s Romy Madley-Croft providing some guest vocals on their recent seductive single “Days”, released on Young Turks. Though they’ve been acting mainly as producers recently, their now playing the first live shows, including a date at Heaven, supporting Mount Kimbie.

SAMPHA is a 20 year old from Morden who has remixed the likes of The XX and Laurel Collective, among others. Decribing his music as ‘a kind of 8-bit Soul’, Sampha mixes raw blues and soul with urban house and stuttering electronic drums.

Cat’s Eyes

ADVERT + BOBBY GILLESPIE DJ SET
Scala
Wednesday 27 April 2011

£13.50 ADV
CATSEYESMUSIC.COM/

The urge to create wonder with sound is rarely indulged in today’s utilitarian pop landscape. In an age when a piece of music can be erased with the click of a mouse, there are few artists pouring their heart and soul into what Brian Wilson called “teenage symphonies” – lovingly sculpted three-minute slices of aural heaven, which grip the listener’s ears and emotions in equal measure. In that mundane world, Cat’s Eyes really are a godsend.

They are a duo, formed by Rachel Zeffira, a renowned Canadian opera soprano and classical multi-instrumentalist based in London, and Faris Badwan, the statuesque singer from noisy British psychedelic-rockers The Horrors. In the collision of their two very separate worlds, something magical has come into being, which brings together all kinds of dualities – pop/classical, traditional/avant-garde, acoustic/electronic, virtuoso/novice, male/female, happy/sad and, why not, good/evil – into a unique and mindblowing whole.

Their debut album, called simply ‘Cat’s Eyes’, is a romantic pop masterpiece fit to dine at the same table as mid-’60s productions by Phil Spector, Joe Meek or Shadow Morton, but with a fiercely modern, experimental premise, which constantly leaves you wondering just what you’re listening to, and how on earth it was created.

BOBBY GILLESPIE, the frontman of alternative rock band Primal Scream opens this night with a DJ Set bringing songs from all different musical genres for a special set. Gillespie is the mastermind behind the band who brought us the memorable albums such as ‘Vanishing Point’, ‘Riot City Blues’ and the stunning ‘Screamdelica’. Although not releasing an album since ‘Beautiful Future’, Gillespie’s band continue to tour with an amazing choice of 9 studio albums to choose their songs from. Cat’s Eyes have recently supported Primal Scream on tour and Gillespie is a clear fan of Faris Badwan’s new project and is looking forward to getting the crowd warmed up for one of his favourite bands this year.

CAT’S EYES are a duo, formed by Rachel Zeffira, a renowned Canadian opera soprano and classical multi-instrumentalist based in London, and Faris Badwan, the statuesque singer from noisy British psychedelic-rockers The Horrors. The collision of their two very separate worlds, bring together all kinds of dualities – pop/classical, traditional/avant-garde, acoustic/electronic, virtuoso/novice, male/female, happy/sad amongst others.

Their debut album, called simply ‘Cat’s Eyes’, is a romantic pop masterpiece taking influence from mid-’60s productions by Phil Spector, Joe Meek and Shadow Morton, but with a fiercely modern, experimental premise. For Faris, it is a major departure from the whirlwind noise of The Horrors. For Rachel, too, it has been a big change from the gruelling work of rehearsing and performing operas and classical pieces in some of the world’s biggest concert halls.

Having put so much of their extra-curricular time into making ‘Cat’s Eyes’, the duo decided that they wanted to promote the project with a series of unusual events. The first took place in December, amid some secrecy, at St Peter’s in the Vatican, which they arranged through Rachel’s connections there, from her Verona days. They performed a reworked version of ‘I Knew It Was Over’ during an afternoon mass, which was attended by seven high-ranking cardinals.

‘Broken Glass EP’ released 28th February on Polydor, the debut album ‘Cat’s Eyes’ follows in April.

DAN HAYWOOD'S NEW HAWKS

Started as a solo project in 2000 by accordionist and drummer Jeremy Barnes (former member of indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel) and named after a line in Cervantes’ Don Quixote (hence the new album’s name), A HAWK AND A HACKSAW became a duo in 2004 when Barnes met violinist Heather Trost. The pair began an adventure that took them to Budapest, Hungary where they lived for two years and met/toured with some of the country’s fnest folk musicians, as well as countless US & European tours both on their own and with big names including Portishead, Calexico and fellow New Mexico resident Beirut (whose Gulag Orkestar album they performed on and helped bring to wider attention). Joined by an ever expanding and contracting line-up of musicians, A Hawk and A Hacksaw seeks to create and document an ecstatic sound much like the village bands of old, with the communal aspect of folk tradition and musicianship the key factor.

Core AHAAH duo of Jeremy Barnes (accordion, percussion) and Heather Trost (violin) have intrepidly explored their love of Eastern European musics, including recording in remote Romanian villages and basing themselves in Budapest (where they put together allstar Hungarian folk group The Hun Hangár Ensemble for a limited-edition EP and tour), as well as touring the world finely balancing raucous shows at folk clubs and Turkish restaurants with grand blow-outs alongside Wilco, Portishead and Beirut among others.

Press quotes on latest album Délivrance (2009)

“So ebullient and full of character that by the time it’s over you feel like you’ve caught a glimpse of the type of joyful festivity that always feels most rewarding after a long journey” Pitchfork

“A cheerfully exuberant fusion based around Hungarian instrumental style, but including a bit of everything, from a Greek melody to echoes of Mexican Mariachi brass and what sounds like a rhythmic of-kilter funeral march that would impress Tom Waits” Guardian

“Underneath all the noise and frenetic cross-fertilising of old and new, East and West, an obvious musical intelligence is at work. Happily, it also clearly recognizes the value of fun” BBC

“…more than mere dalliance or faux goulash … it only takes about ten seconds of exposure to the opening track … to be overwhelmed by the evocative, aromatic, lovingly and closely simulated delights of this album” The Wire

“The band … increasingly resemble modern-day musicologists as they travel across cultural frontiers tapping into grassroots folk” Metro UK

Dan Haywood’s New Hawks are a collection of songs, and also a band, whose epic scope marries transatlantic cosmic roots music with a deeply poetic English folk soul.

A rambling, rolling band whose crazed stage presence, with band members swapping instruments and psychic powers amongst themselves and with the audience, has ensured them cult status. Now they hit the road to hawk their album, the first and last to be released under this name.

The British Isles finally have their own Lambchop – but only for a fleeting while, as a self-imposed time limit means this band are set to end just as they begin. Here’s where New Hawks the band comes in: a collective of kindred spirits from across Northern England carefully assembled over time by Haywood, who bring flesh to the album’s smart and ever-shifting arrangements with guitars, fiddles, cello, drums, hand percussion and more. Haywood himself is a compelling frontal figure, orating his adventures with a certain awkward relish and a weird glint in his eye, both the court jester and the king.

Conceived in painstaking fashion over five years by Lancaster-based singer/songwriter/ornithologist Haywood as a way of documenting his bird-and-people-watching travels around rural Scotland, the New Hawks as songs are captured on a sprawling, hugely ambitious 32-track album that is this project’s first and only release (out in December). A vast modern-day Joycean folk/rock cartography with Haywood as your charismatic navigator poet, and as many ruggedly beautiful crannies to

THE PICTISH TRAIL
Bush Hall
Wednesday 20 April 2011

£10 ADV
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/PICTISHTRAIL, WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THELONEPIGEON

LONE PIGEON is returning in a big way on the 11th of April 2011 with the release of ‘Time Capsule’, a massive 7 album box set which contains pretty much everything the man has ever made. To celebrate the release of this box set, we are pleased to announce a very special show at Bush Hall.
LONE PIGEON cuts an enigmatic figure, whilst his musical eccentricities funnily enough refuse to allow his style to be pigeonholed. Reviews name check familiar artists but in every essence they are wholly Pigeon. Beguiling, fragile and bereft of ego, vanity or spin Lone Pigeon crouches almost alone in a popular culture in which he has no interest and little understanding. Outside of his hometown the LP live is a very rare bird, but in full flight there really is nothing more spellbinding as anyone lucky to have witnessed can attest. An artist, poet, musician, traveler and believer, the LP is a complicated character but with his music he creates sublime melodies that can elicit the simplest emotions; tunes that will make you smile with joy or alternately weep in shared sorrow. You would have to be wooden not to care.

THE PICTISH TRAIL is the nom de plume of 28-yr-old singer-songwriter Johnny Lynch, who – alongside Kenny Anderson (aka King Creosote) – runs micro-indie DIY-folk collective Fence Records, in a remote fishing village in Fife, Scotland.  His music is a sonorous mixture of acoustic-driven balladry and lo-fi synthesised pop, that has been described as “a post-summer trove of sun-warped electro, anamorphic folk” (Plan B Magazine).

The immediacy of Banjo Or Freakout’s sound — a sprawl of guitars, synths, drum loops and effects — is simply mesmeric. Born from his love for artists like Dennis Wilson and Bobb Trimble, Banjo Or Freakout is full of woozy tremolo guitar, horizon-set acoustics and heartfelt vocals. His oblique lyrics, rhythmic tribal beats and lush melody all suggest something otherworldly, an intangible feeling.

Banjo Or Freakout has recently toured with the likes of Gold Panda and the Go! Team, and in a few weeks will be off to America to support Papercuts on their upcoming tour.
